There’s much more Marvel coming to Disney+… and that sounds more like a threat than anything else. Today, Marvel released a “Look Ahead” trailer for their upcoming 2025 Disney+ slate (and one more from 2024), and it’s a mix of things that might be good and things that definitely won’t be. After an intro from Deadpool via an altered clip from Deadpool & Wolverine (dirty pool, guys), the trailer showcases Daredevil: Born Again, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, Ironheart, Wonder Man, What If…? Season 3, Marvel Zombies, and Eyes of Wakanda. You can see the “Look Ahead” trailer below:
This is the clear highlight of the trailer, and Marvel knew it would be, so they put it first. Kicking it off with the Kingpin saying, “It’s been a long time, hasn’t it?” is perfect from a marketing standpoint because it reminds people of better days when Daredevil was in full swing on Netflix and everyone was happy. Is Born Again going to be a worthy continuation of that series? I have no idea; given their current hit-to-miss ratio, I lean towards no. But there have been positive signs, like Marvel essentially reshooting the bulk of the show to be more in line with its Netflix predecessor, including bringing back Deborah Ann Woll’s Karen Page and Elden Henson’s Foggy Nelson. But the fact that Marvel had to be dragged into that kicking and screaming is a red flag in itself. However, the clips in the trailer are great, if only because they invoke the Daredevil we love. They’re also making sure everybody watching knows the Punisher is back, which makes sense because the Punisher is awesome, and everyone (outside of Marvel’s current comic book writers) loves him. Aside from Frank, it mostly focuses on the brewing conflict between Daredevil and the Kingpin, with all the action and verbal showdowns that entails, and it looks great, regardless of what the end product will be.
Aside from Daredevil: Born Again, I think this one has the most potential. I like the idea of seeing a younger Peter Parker figuring out how to be Spider-Man with his rudimentary suit. This is an alternate timeline from the MCU films, so they’re not limited by what’s happened on the silver screen; this Spidey could have his own versions of the character’s classic villains, something Tom Holland’s wall-crawler was largely robbed of. (Speaking of which, Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man would’ve been a great name for the next Tom Holland film if they had gone the back-to-basics route suggested by No Way Home’s ending, but having seen Venom: The Last Dance, I’m about 90% sure the rumors about Spider-Man 4’s plot are true.) This is a very small clip, so it’s hard to judge what the show will be like. I’m not big on the animation, which I feel like I say about virtually everything they make today, although I thought the brick gag was funny. We’ll see.
The show Marvel didn’t realize nobody wanted till it was too late is on its way, and while the clips in this trailer don’t show off much, it looks – at best – blander than oatmeal. It looks like a cheap, teenage girl version of Iron Man, which is basically the concept in a nutshell. If the rumors are true and they’re choosing this show to act as Mephisto’s debut, I’m surprised they’re not playing that up to make it feel more important than it probably is. (I notice they left out the drag queen, too.) Of course, Ironheart will probably kill Mephisto before he meets anyone like Doctor Strange, Ghost Rider, or Doctor Doom because she’s just that good, but they’re leaving good bait in the bucket.
I still haven’t watched What If…? Season 2, so this didn’t register much with me. I thought Season 1 was a very mixed bag, with a few good episodes, a few that were awful, and a few that were just okay. But the animation was awful, and the good stuff wasn’t good enough to make me anticipate more of this show. It’s hard to make much from these quick shots that last maybe three seconds, anyway.
I don’t care. The What If…? episode this is based on was not bad, mostly for the surprising character interactions, particularly Spider-Man and Wasp. But I wasn’t bursting at the seams for an entire series based on the concept, and a few flashes of growling costumed zombies didn’t convince me otherwise.
This is another one I don’t really care about. I was never much of a Wonder Man fan, although I imagine those who do love him aren’t thrilled. The race swap is one thing, but that annoyingly meta “I was born to play this character” line makes it feel like they’re going to make a big deal out of it. There’s no sign of Ed Harris yet, and it’s hard to get a bead on what this show will be like, but they managed to drag out an even goofier-looking version of Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery. I don’t understand why they’re suddenly bringing this character back, especially given the reception to Iron Man 3 and the Trevor/Mandarin plot twist. So far, Wonder Man doesn’t look great.
Wow, there’s really nothing to this one. It’s literally two quick shots from the series, one of which is a woman saying, “I am ready.” Eyes of Wakanda is also a puzzler to me; it feels like they’re banking on fans leaping to anything related to Black Panther in any way. But I don’t know if that will work; people liked T’Challa as a character, and Marvel stupidly got rid of him. As far as I know, this show doesn’t even feature his supporting cast like Wakanda Forever did. At a certain point, you can’t just say “Wakanda” and expect people to show up.
The rest is an ad for Deadpool & Wolverine coming to Disney+ and a rundown of the release dates. Can you imagine having such an anemic, listless slate of shows that you have to tack on the streaming debut of a huge summer blockbuster to make it look cool? It’s also interesting that Marvel is no longer spacing these shows out across the next two years; aside from What If…? Season 3, which arrives in December, everything is being released in 2025. I wonder if this is what Chris Gore was talking about when he reported on the coming Marvel sea change; he said they were going to burn through all their crap shows and movies, so moving them all to 2025 would fit that plan. Next year looks like it’s going to be rough, with maybe one or two hidden gems.
