Now that the writers’ strike has ended, Hollywood wants to get some more movies into development for when the actors settle their disputes as well. That means hearing pitches for the big blockbuster movies that have been in the ether for years. On that note, Deadline has heard from sources and “insiders” that Marvel will begin hearing pitches for their first X-Men movie in the fall. There is no rush, Deadline is told, as they’ve got plenty of delayed movies that still have to be made, finished, and released before then; the last Avengers movie on the docket, Avengers: Secret Wars, is currently scheduled for May 7, 2027, over three and a half years from now. As such, Marvel is not exactly scrambling to find a writer for X-Men, and a decision isn’t expected until early next year. This makes sense, since rumors are swirling that Secret Wars will act as a reboot of the MCU and all the previous Marvel films, leading to a version of All-New, All-Different Marvel (which I don’t understand because that’s pretty much what they’re already doing).
In a video, Eric July said that Marvel was foolish not to immediately start developing X-Men and Fantastic Four movies when they acquired 20th Century Fox, and he’s right. They went with the Eternals, Shuri, Shang-Chi, and Ironheart, with TV shows introducing Moon Knight and Ms. Marvel and She-Hulk, instead of taking advantage of the big guns it had just bought. Now, the X-Men are waiting in the wings instead of quickly picking up where the Avengers left off. The implication of (another version of) All-New, All-Different Marvel doesn’t make me excited to see what they do with the X-Men either. If that’s true, they’ve learned nothing from their failures and will continue to give comic book fans the opposite of what they want. But they’re happy to shamelessly use beloved versions of the characters like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine to placate the public till the big switch comes. But at least they’re attempting to use the popular characters they control now; I guess that proves they’re not totally crazy.
