Marvel’s Eternals Banned From Releasing In Middle East Countries

According to The Hollywood ReporterMarvel’s newest MCU addition, Eternals, has been banned in the Middle Eastern countries of Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Qatar. The Hollywood Reporter states that the film may have been removed due to LGBTQ+ representation in countries where homosexuality is still illegal. “Sources suggest the decision was likely made over the inclusion of a same-sex couple in the film and the MCU‘s first gay superhero. In one scene, the character Phastos (played by Brian Tyree Henry) and his on-screen husband Ben (Haaz Sleiman) share a passionate kiss. Homosexuality is still officially illegal across the Gulf.”

They go on to say the reason for its removal was not confirmed. “One regional cinema chain explained that Eternals had been “banned” but said they hadn’t been told why.” Controversy previously arose when Eternals actor Kumail Nanjiani tweeted, “looks like we’re upsetting the right people,” in response to review bombing on IMDB related to LGBTQ+ representation in the film. However, the film’s critic rating on Rotten Tomatoes has fallen to 53%, leaving people to question why it’s not only “upsetting the right people,” but almost the majority at this point.

Eternals releases November 5, so we’ll find out fan reactions very soon.
