In an exclusive with Entertainment Weekly, Euphoria star Maude Apatow discussed her character Lexi Howard’s blossoming presence in season 2. Lexi was just a supporting character in Euphoria‘s first season, a foil for her best friend Rue (Zendaya) and her sister Cassie (Sydney Sweeney). But Apatow and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson pushed Lexi to the forefront in season 2, giving her a character arc inspired by Maude’s own high school years. A romance between Lexi and Fez (Angus Cloud) has been brewing this season, and Lexi has put on a play inspired by her friend group. Apatow had this to say of the experience of filming this season:
“All this stuff about Lexi getting aggro backstage, that was all just based on me in high school. Once we talked about the idea, Sam went in and wrote it all. Sam changed it a lot right before we shot it. So I was just sort of along for the ride.”
She goes on to detail how she and Sam Levinson decided to pair Lexi up with Fez this season and the wildly positive fan reactions to that choice. Lexi’s backstory with her dad and Apatow’s creative relationship with Levinson also come up quite a bit. Read the full interview here.
I got into Euphoria recently on a friend’s recommendation, and I’m hooked. I didn’t know anything about any of the actors except for Zendaya. I had no idea Lexi was played by the daughter of movie director Judd Apatow and actress Leslie Mann! It’s interesting to see just how collaborative the story of Euphoria really is, with Levinson working pieces of the actors into the characters, as well as his own troubled history. I’ve enjoyed season 2 more than season 1, and Lexi is actually a big part of why. The introspection into how their father leaving affected her differently than Cassie is moving, and I’ve also loved her developing relationship with Fez. The scene in episode 6 when they bond over watching Stand By Me is really sweet, candid, and an example of what I like about this show. I just hope whatever tragedy goes down in next week’s finale doesn’t involve Fez.
