Meg 2 Trailer Surfaces From the Stone Age

The prehistoric shark monsters are back, as is their only natural predator: Jason Statham. Warner Bros. has released a trailer for Meg 2: The Trench, a sequel to 2018’s schlocky creature feature The Meg. Based on the novel The Trench by Steve Alten, Meg 2: The Trench sees more of the Megalodon sharks surface in the Pacific, while Jason Statham’s Jonas Taylor must go back into deep-sea action to stop them from making a meal of mankind. Cliff Curtis and Page Kennedy return with Statham from the first film; they’re joined by Sienna Guillory, Skyler Samuels, Wu Jing, and Sergio Peris-Mencheta. Ben Wheatley replaces Jon Turteltaub in the director’s chair. Meg 2: The Trench hits theaters on August 4, 2023, and you can see the trailer below:

“I just hope it goes better than last time.”

You and me both, lady.

I didn’t like The Meg, and that means a lot coming from someone who will follow Jason Statham into any movie. But they could make a fun flick out of the concept, so there is potential for the sequel to do what its predecessor couldn’t. The change in directors is promising; while John Turteltaub has my thanks for giving eight-year-old me 3 Ninjas, he made a mess of The Meg. I’m not overly familiar with Ben Wheatley – I saw High Rise and didn’t much care for it, but I know he’s highly regarded – but if he can give Meg 2: The Trench a better look than Turteltaub did The Meg, this could be just the right light, violent gorefest for August. The trailer itself is fun; I love the opening, where The Meg devours a Tyrannosaurus Rex, establishing its badass bonafides, and Jason Statham holding The Meg off with his leg, doing the same. I also like the use of Heart’s “Barracuda;” the inaccuracy of it perfectly fits the tone of this film, or at least what the tone should be: “We’re just here to have fun.” Let’s hope so.
