Men in Black: International Trailer Flashes Online

Earth’s last line of defense is back, as Sony has unveiled the first trailer for Men in Black: International. This is the fourth entry in the sci-fi comedy series that began with 1997’s Men in Black, starring Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith. While the first three films were directed by Barry Sonnenfeld (who is forgiven for Wild Wild West and all other sins past and present because he also directed Get Shorty), Men in Black: International is helmed by F. Gary Gray (also an excellent filmmaker; interestingly, he directed the vastly inferior sequel to Get Shorty, Be Cool, but we’ll let The Negotiator cancel that out). Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson are the new MIB partners, with Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson stepping in as elder statesmen at the alien-policing agency; the film releases on June 14, 2019. Check out the Men in Black: International trailer below…

Not to sound too Grinchy at Christmastime, but the Men in Black: International trailer doesn’t impress me much. I’m not a fan of the series; I didn’t like the first one, saw bits and pieces of the second at a friend’s house, and skipped the third altogether. The tone just doesn’t do it for me, and I couldn’t invest myself in any of the wacky goings-on. International looks to be more of the same in that regard, which is good for fans. And elements of the Men in Black: International trailer are appealing. Chris Hemsworth is terrific, and I’m glad he’s getting so many roles outside of Thor (I appear to be in the minority on this, but I quite liked 13 Strong earlier this year). Tessa Thompson, I can take or leave, but I think it’s a good idea to change up the mentor/student relationship by having a man and a woman as the partners. The presence of actors like Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson is always appreciated. I also think there are some intriguing possibilities with having the plot revolve around a mole within the MIB (I guess it’s a coin toss as to whether it’s Liam Neeson or Emma Thompson). And, finally, I like the location change to London. If you enjoy these movies, the Men in Black: International trailer offers a good balance of new and familiar; it’s just not really for me.
