Yesterday, Disney released first-look images from Moana 2 and Mufasa: The Lion King. Both films will be released later this year and originate from the original Disney films Moana and The Lion King, the latter often being referred to as an unofficial adaptation of Hamlet. Linda Woolverton, Irene Mecchi, and Jonathan Roberts wrote Mufasa, which stars Seth Rogen, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Billy Eichner, Aaron Pierre, and John Kani. Rogen and Eichner played Pumbaa and Timon in 2019’s The Lion King live-action remake. Mufasa comes out on December 20th. Moana 2 takes place three years after the original film, and both Auli’i Cravalho and Dwayne Johnson will return to voice Moana and Maui. Moana 2 hits theaters on November 27th. Well, my thoughts on these pictures don’t differ very much from my thoughts on the movies. I didn’t like the Lion King remake, and it was one of the most unnecessary, shot-for-shot recreated remakes yet. That’s saying a lot for Disney; most of their recent remakes have been identical to – yet somehow, still worse than – the original movies. I can’t say the image looks bad artistically, and even if I thought the shot from Mufasa was ugly, I don’t care enough about a Lion King remake-prequel to argue as much. I am concerned about Moana 2, but I’m cautiously looking forward to it. I love Moana, unlike the Lion King remake, which I hated. I also love the colors and details in this picture, and Moana does look a little bit older than she was in the first movie. Props to them for conveying that detail in her face. I wish they had gotten Lin Manuel-Miranda to do the film’s songs, but I will watch it, and I hope it’s a worthy sequel.
