Disney and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s Moana remake has found its director. Thomas Kail is known for Broadway’s Hamilton and the most recent rendition of Sweeney Todd starring Josh Groban and Annaleigh Ashford. However, Kail has also worked on TV projects like Fosse/Version and Up Here. Dwayne Johnson is reprising the role of Maui, but Moana herself will be recast.
Kail makes sense, as he’s familiar with musicals and has worked with Lin-Manuel Miranda, Moana’s songwriter, before. However, I don’t really care who directs this movie because they shouldn’t be making it. Moana isn’t old enough to be remade, but more importantly, there isn’t much room for improvement. This is being made as a vanity project for the Rock and a money-making scheme for Disney. Good for Kail getting work, but this isn’t good news.
