Netflix has moved the expected launch date for its cheaper, ad-supported plan up to November. The release was initially planned for early 2023, but Netflix wants to beat Disney+ into the with-ads market. Netflix projects a userbase of 500,000 for the ad-supported version by the end of this year. Netflix is proposing a price to advertisers of $65 per thousand views. This is far above the norm of $20 or less for that many views. Read a statement from a Netflix rep below:
“We are still in the early days of deciding how to launch a lower-priced, ad-supported tier and no decisions have been made.”
It seems like everybody wants in on the ad-supported market these days. It’s not surprising; as these services continue climbing in price, many people are rotating subscriptions monthly or dropping them altogether. Personally, switching to ad-supported Disney+ ($7.99/month) and Netflix (potentially $7-9/month) would save me a bit every month. It’s easy to imagine larger families or even single people sitting through ads or getting snacks during them to save a buck. Every day, I feel like streaming services become more like cable, and this is another step in that direction. I have no problem with it; it provides more customers to the service and more choices to the consumer. I just find it funny to see it unfold.
