Netflix has revealed the first images of the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender main cast in character. Check out the first look at Aang (Gordon Cormier), Katara (Kiawentiio), Sokka (Ian Ousley), and Zuko (Dallas Liu) in live-action here:
And here’s the first teaser for the series:
The teaser is basically pointless. We already know what the insignias for the nations/elements look like, and I don’t understand how showing them back to back like this is supposed to be exciting. I may be biased because I’ve been nervous about this series from the start and even more since Bryke dropped out. I respect the actors and don’t know enough about them to judge their fit for these roles. However, while the hair and makeup look great, I still think Kiawentiio and Ian Ousley are too pale to portray Katara and Sokka.
The tone of the teaser, such that it is, seems too foreboding and “gritty.” I know it’s just a teaser, and I’m left to assume they don’t have any footage ready to show. But it just doesn’t feel right, and this fits nicely into the narrative the OG show’s creators conveyed in leaving this project. Avatar has dark elements and showcases disturbing events and themes, but it’s also ultimately an uplifting story with a lot of heart and humor. I also don’t think the fight choreography or effects work in Avatar lend themselves to the limitations presented by a live-action show, no matter the budget or talent behind it. I’m infinitely more excited for the films and series Mike and Bryan are creating at Avatar Studios. I will watch the Netflix show out of curiosity and to review it, but I will be well and truly shocked if it even touches the charm, wonder, wit, or emotion of the original.
