Hello, Sidney. After a tumultuous couple of months that saw Scream 7 fall apart following new franchise lead Melissa Barrera’s firing, Spyglass has been scrambling to put the pieces of its cash cow back together. Well, they’ve finally got it. Neve Campbell, the actress who plays Sidney Prescott, the lead of the first four Scream movies (and made an insulting cameo in Scream 5), took to Instagram to announce that she is returning for Scream 7 with a picture of the script. Not only that, but the film will be directed by Kevin Williamson, who wrote the three best entries – Scream, Scream 2, and Scream 4 – will direct. There’s no more information at this point, but Campbell seems excited.

Okay, Neve Campbell returning as Sidney and Kevin Williamson directing are good things. However, look at the writing credits on the picture of the script; they’re given to Guy Busick and James Vanderbilt, who wrote the last two lousy Scream movies. That is disappointing, and I hope Williamson is able to throw out any stupid crap they do and make this a good Scream film. Also unclear is how big a role Campbell will have. Is she the lead again, as she should be, or is Sidney going to be another glorified cameo while a bunch of annoying teenagers nobody cares about take over? If it’s the latter, they’re squandering a golden opportunity to save this franchise from the gutter they threw it in with these last two. (I know they made money; I’m talking quality.) It would be incredible if Williamson retconned those two out of the continuity and started fresh after Scream 4, but I doubt he’ll do that. And fine; it’s not perfect, but I do think it’s possible to right the ship, as opposed to something like Star Wars. I’m still worried because of the writers and the lack of clarity about Sidney’s role in the film, but I am finally interested in the next Scream movie again.
