Echo is only five days away, and Marvel is upping the publicity ante with a new trailer. This one, unsurprisingly, does not focus on the title character but Vincent D’Onofrio’s Kingpin, the fan-favorite (for good reason) villain from Daredevil – and, to a much lesser extent, Hawkeye – who makes his return here. There are also some shots and voiceover from Daredevil, making sure we know how many great characters will be popping up. The five-episode series follows deaf criminal Maya Lopez as she reconnects with her Native American heritage while being pursued by her former employer, the Kingpin. Alaqua Cox stars as Maya, with D’Onofrio’s Kingpin and Charlie Cox’s Daredevil appearing in supporting roles. Echo launches on Disney+ on January 9, 2024, and you can see the new trailer below:
My favorite thing about the new (and presumably final) Echo trailer is that it shows footage from Daredevil, the Netflix series. Before now, Marvel had been hemming and hawing over whether the Netflix shows were canon; aside from the fact that they’re reusing the same actors as Daredevil and Kingpin, ditching the previous series would be maddening because they fit beautifully into the MCU, no multiverse necessary. I’m glad their inclusion is confirmed now because the most exciting thing about Echo is picking up with these characters. Marvel must get that too, because this trailer is all about Kingpin, with some Daredevil moments thrown in (I suspect he only has a small guest-starring role on Echo, which is why his presence is more limited than Kingpin’s); Maya is very much in the background. This is just the latest indication that Marvel doesn’t have much faith in Echo, and they’re hoping to sell it on D’Onofrio and Charlie Cox. I don’t know if that’ll be enough, but I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make me want to watch.
