It is once again time to revisit the dystopian land of Panem. Lionsgate announced that there will be yet another Hunger Games film set to release in November 2026, with Francis Lawrence, who helmed the last two films in the franchise, in talks to direct. Along with this, author Suzanne Collins told The Associated Press that she is writing the novel on which the new movie will be based, titled Sunrise on the Reaping, to be published in March of next year.
Meredith Wieck and Scott O’Brien will oversee the production of the film, while Patricia Laucella and Phil Strina acquired the rights to the book for Lionsgate.
Both novel and film will follow the character of Haymitch Abernathy (who fans know as Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark’s mentor, portrayed by Woody Harrelson in the movies) on the day of the 50th Hunger Games, also known as the Second Quarter Quell, set twenty-four years before the events of the first novel in the Hunger Games trilogy. Adam Fogelson, chairman of the studio’s motion picture group, said in a recent statement via Variety,
“Suzanne Collins is a master storyteller and our creative north star. We couldn’t be more fortunate than to be guided and trusted by a collaborator whose talent and imagination are so consistently brilliant. The Second Quarter Quell is legendary and looms large over the history of the Games, even into the time of Katniss Everdeen a quarter-century later.”
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, the previous prequel film in the series, which made $337 million at the box office, was dwarfed by the original film trilogy, which made $3.3 billion worldwide, with Catching Fire being the highest grossing with $865 million.
Now, I open the floor to you, readers. What do you think of this? Are you excited for both or rolling your eyes at another prequel? Please feel free to express (respectfully) all opinions on this news below.
I only didn’t watch the last film because of that horrible Zegler girl and her equally horrible comments about the original Snow White animated film by Disney. It’s a shame because I enjoyed the premises of the book.
I also enjoyed the original Hunger Games books and films but where I used to cry when Rue died I’m probably going to start laughing now because the actress has ruined that character for me (same with Zegler because she played a character that I liked on ‘Songbirds and Snakes’).
This could be interesting and I might watch the film if no horrible person is attached to it this time round.
Rachel Zegler is on my Do Not Watch list permanently. So is that girl from The Acolyte, Amandla Stenberg. All the privilege, none of the merit of earning it.
Might be good. It all comes down to the writing and execution. I will hold off and see what Lauren Chen says about it, because she was a good fan of the first Hunger Games. Will wait until she reviews it.
