Dust off your Walthers and shake your martinis, because the next James Bond film is finally coming together. EON Productions has confirmed that Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 127 Hours) will be directing the 25th Bond spy thriller, with collaborator John Hodge writing the screenplay. The title still hasn’t been revealed for what is currently being referred to as Bond 25, but 007’s latest mission will begin filming on December 3, 2018 at the legendary Pinewood Studios for a UK release on October 25 of next year, and in the US two weeks later on November 8. Daniel Craig will return in the lead role. The film will be distributed internationally by Universal Studios and in the United States by MGM.
This news does nothing for me either way. I’m sure Boyle will make a fine Bond movie, but I doubt it’ll be anything revolutionary, and that’s perfectly fine; I’d rather no one reinvent the wheel too much. Boyle directed that James Bond short film that ran before the Olympics, which was… dull and underwhelming, but that wasn’t really Boyle’s fault. None of his nor Hodge’s previous work screams 007, but then neither did Sam Mendes’, and that turned out spectacularly well. Despite the rumors, I was holding out hope that they’d somehow lure Mendes back – Skyfall and SPECTRE made it clear how much he loves and understands James Bond, as a character and an icon – but Boyle is fine. My hope is that the series doesn’t take a sharp reverse after the lukewarm response to SPECTRE (though I’ll say this: every hardcore Bond fan I know loves that movie); I was glad to see an old school Bond film again, and I don’t want to go back to mopey, pared down, could-be-anyone Bond. I’m also ready for Craig to walk off into the sunset and someone more enthusiastic and fun to play the part, but for now I’m just glad the next movie is finally coming together.
What do you think of Danny Boyle directing the next James Bond film? Who do you want to see fill 007’s shoes once Craig leaves? Do you love SPECTRE or want to go back to Bourne Bond? Let us know in the comments!
