With just a month to go till Loki launches its second season on Disney+, the ad campaign isn’t letting up. A new trailer is now online, much briefer than the previous one and with no new information, but it does have one of those mega-lame cut-aways from a character about to curse. (“Everything is turning to sh… WHAAAAAAAT?”) Loki season 2, which again stars Tom Hiddleston, Owen Wilson, Sophia Di Martino, Gug Mbatha-Raw, and Jonathan Majors, premieres on Disney+ on October 6, 2023. You can see the new miniature trailer below:
I can’t imagine this 45-second commercial – which is what it is much more than it is a trailer – swaying anyone either way. It feels more like a reminder that the new season is coming than something to whet the appetite. If anything Marvel puts on Disney+ is going to be successful, it’s Loki season 2; season 1 was by far their highest-rated show on the streaming platform, and for some reason, people seem to have liked it. But Loki is also the last live-action Marvel series on Disney+ this year after a shuffle moved Echo to 2024. Andre on Midnight’s Edge posited that this was to make Disney’s fourth-quarter earnings report look better, as Echo is likely going to bomb. As such, they’ve got to do everything they can to make Loki a success, and that means advertising.
I’m curious to see how this pans out for them. The first season arrived before everyone realized how badly the new phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe would suck, and it promised the introduction of Kang the Conqueror, the overarching villain of the MCU’s next leg. But after the dancing buffoon in the season finale and the underwhelming variant from Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, are people excited to see Kang again as some wacky inventor? I think pretty much all the show has going for it anymore is Loki himself, and that’s still a big deal because people love the character. But do they love what the series has done to him? I hate it, but it’s hard to gauge people’s opinion on this; maybe just seeing Tom Hiddleston back as Loki will be enough.
