New Titans Trailer Lightens Up Just a Bit

Following their San Diego Comic-Con showing, DC has released a second trailer for their upcoming TV show Titans. Taking place in Detroit, the live-action series will be a darker, more serious take on the Teen Titans, featuring Brenton Thwaites as Robin, Anna Diop as Starfire, Teagan Croft as Raven, and Ryan Potter as Beast Boy in the main cast, with Alan Ritchson as Hawk and Minka Kelly as Dove in recurring roles. Titans will debut on DC’s streaming service, DC Universe, on October 12, 2018, airing one of its twelve episodes each week. A spinoff series, Doom Patrol, will likely release sometime in 2019. It seems pretty obvious that DC/Warner Bros. have heard the fans’ criticisms because the new Titans trailer is lighter on the violence and language than its predecessor. It’s still grim, and Robin looks like he’s one step away from exploding into a killing spree, but there’s no clip of him shooting someone in the face, and he doesn’t hurl a particular epithet Batman’s way. There are also glimpses of him as Dick Grayson, smart-alecky Detroit cop, as well as Dick throwing R-shaped not-Batarangs (Robinrangs?) at a wall, perhaps indicating his desire to escape from Batman’s shadow. The other Titans seem like lost souls as well; maybe that’ll be the hook. There are a number of jokey clips throughout; every so often, it feels like DC realizes it has an image problem. I doubt they removed the dark stuff from the show, but clearly they’re rethinking their sales pitch to the viewer.
