Nimona, the last film from Blue Sky Studios, has been revived by Netflix and Annapurna. This comes following Disney’s acquisition and dissolution of Blue Sky and cancellation of Nimona. The film will be a techno-medieval world unique in the medium of animation and follow Knight Ballister Boldheart (Riz Ahmed), who is accused of a crime he didn’t commit. Eugene Lee Yang and Chloe Grace Moretz will also star in the film, which is being directed by Nick Bruno and Troy Quane. Nimona is an adaptation of ND Stevenson’s graphic novel. The film will be released in 2023.
This is great. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Blue Sky or their films, but it’s sad whenever the industry shrinks like this. And lately, it’s always something to do with Disney, isn’t it? I don’t know a whole lot about Nimona, but the cast looks good, and I’m interested in the premise. It’s a relief to hear that we will get to see Nimona after all, and the release date is not too far off. It’s also strangely satisfying to see Disney not get the last word in this conversation. I’m always in favor of the most variety of art possible, and I’d love to see what the artists at Blue Sky cooked up before they were unceremoniously laid off.
