I’m a big fan of Chris Pine; he’s an incredibly talented actor, and obviously, he has charisma for days. I think 2016’s Hell or High Water was a wake-up call for a lot of people as to his talents beyond Captain Kirk and roles of that sort. This year, he has reteamed with that film’s director, David Mackenzie, for Outlaw King. In this new film, Pine portrays Robert the Bruce as he fights to win back Scotland from English occupation, a la Braveheart. See the Outlaw King trailer below:
This. Film. Looks. EPIC. I’m honestly stunned because this does not look like a Netflix movie at all. The budget must be insane; the scale of the battles excites me, and the performances appear to be magnificent. Pine looks truly amazing, and he’s delivering on the Scottish accent. In those final moments, when he gives his speech, I got goosebumps. Whether or not the Outlaw King trailer disappointed, I was going to check this film out purely for Pine and Mackenzie. The cast surrounding Pine, however, is also really strong, highlighted by Pine’s Hell or High Water co-star Ben Foster, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. I can see some being nervous about the film because of Netflix being attached, with its catalog of schlocky movies, but I have hope that this is more Beasts of No Nation and less Mute. All in all, if this trailer is indicative of the film, Outlaw King looks to be one of the best films of the year.
