An iconic lawyer is back on the case as the first trailer for HBO’s new Perry Mason limited series starring The Americans’ Matthew Rhys – who succeeds Raymond Burr and Monte Markam in the role – has arrived online. Amid the noir ambiance, Mason is called on to solve the case at hand, as the LAPD can’t be trusted. The trailer closes on a voiceover of Mason saying there’s the legal way to do things or the right way. Check out the Perry Mason trailer below:

To say this show has been a long time coming would be an understatement. What started as a feature adaptation at Warner Bros. under Robert Downey Jr.’s Team Downey banner has gone through many permutations, most notably with True Detective’s Nic Pizzolatto partnering with Downey Jr. on the TV iteration, only for the writer to exit for another season of his beloved crime show. When the project became a limited series with Rhys in the lead, I was still excited, though it was a little bittersweet now that Downey Jr. wasn’t playing the titular character. That being said, this Perry Mason trailer really works for me. It looks like the series will not only reward fans of the original show but also fans of the old school, square-jawed archetype. While this is planned as a limited series, hopefully, they’ll be able to make more of these, as it’s filling a niche that is sorely lacking in the entertainment landscape right now. Regardless, I’ll be watching Perry Mason when it premieres on June 21st at 9 PM.
