Peter Dinklage Attacks Live-Action Snow White Remake

In yesterday’s edition of Marc Maron’s WTF Podcast, guest Peter Dinklage got into his problems with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, specifically Disney’s upcoming live-action remake. The actor is best known as Tyrion Lannister on HBO’s Game of Thrones but has been performing professionally since 1995. The live-action Snow White adaptation will be directed by Marc Webb and star Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. Dinklage’s statement follows: “Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White, but you’re still telling the story of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me.” He elaborated on this more as the podcast went on:

“You’re progressive in one way, but then you’re still making that f—ing backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the f— are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soap box? I guess I’m not loud enough. I don’t know which studio that is, but they were so proud of it. All love and respect to the actress and all the people who thought they were doing the right thing. But I’m just like, what are you doing?”

Overall, I’m not sure whether or not I agree that it’s inherently harmful to show fantasy dwarves in film. I can see Peter Dinklage’s point, and in fairness, I can’t imagine what people like him endure in the way of discrimination and mistreatment. I can guess that it would feel like a taunt to see little people relegated to support roles like this, dressed in silly hats, and reduced to one character trait. Regardless of that, though, they shouldn’t be remaking Snow White, so anybody who criticizes that decision has my support. It’s also a good point that Disney wants to be patted on the back for casting diverse leads in their films but doesn’t consider the framing of little people in this way. I just don’t see the need (or want from anyone) for a remake of this classic film. I don’t want to see whatever “updates” they plan on making to the romance between Snow White and the Prince. I like Gal Gadot a lot, and Zegler was also very good in West Side Story. But this is one of an ever-growing list of Disney movies I’m actively dreading.
