A Variety exclusive has revealed a brand new poster and casting information for the Disney+ Phineas and Ferb revival. Following the 2020 Disney+ original movie Phineas and Ferb: Candace Against The Universe, rumors swirled regarding a full continuation of the series that initially ran from 2007 to 2015 on Disney Channel and Disney XD. Then, in January 2023, a return batch of 40 episodes was officially announced. New episodes of Phineas and Ferb will air on Disney+ beginning in 2025.
Vincent Martella (Phineas Flynn,) David Errigo Jr. (Ferb Fletcher as of 2020’s Candace Against the Universe, replacing Thomas Brodie-Sangster), Ashley Tisdale as Candace Flynn, Caroline Rhea as Linda Flynn-Fletcher, Dee Bradley Baker as Perry the Platypus, and Alyson Stoner as Isabella Garcia-Shapiro are all back. Co-creator Dan Povenmire plays Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz, and Jeff Marsh is Major Francis Monogram. The revival will also feature a slew of “notable actors, musicians, athletes and more.” The synopsis reads:
“The new season of Phineas and Ferb will follow the inventive stepbrothers as they tackle another 104 days of summer. Candace is more determined than ever to finally bust her little brothers while their pet platypus, Perry, continues to lead a double life as the suave Agent P, whose sole mission is to thwart Dr. Doofenshmirtz from taking over the Tri-State area.”
At this year’s Anaheim D23 convention, Povenmire and Marsh presented Season 5’s song, “Summer Is Starting Right Now.” They also announced that the writing staff contains both returning and new writers. Olivia Olson, who voices Vanessa Doofenshmirtz in the series, is among the new additions to the writer’s room.
And here’s a poster previewing season 5’s key art:
I am so excited for this. I love Phineas and Ferb, but even more, I love what it represents. Disney Channel (or, in this case, the Disney+ streaming service) should have always been making silly cartoons with clever jokes, not live-action sitcoms set in high school. These shows have an appeal that goes beyond their young demographic, something you can’t say about, for example, Disney’s Zombies. Gravity Falls is probably my favorite modern Disney Channel show, but I always liked Phineas and Ferb for its zany humor and unique characters. I was really disappointed in Candace Against the Universe, which was just okay. The music was a step down from the show’s usual standard, including Phineas and Ferb Across the 2nd Dimension and the series’ various specials. I also found Ali Wong annoying and miscast as the villain, Super Super Big Doctor. But I’m open to more stories with these characters because the possibilities are endless, and one mediocre movie doesn’t change that. For what it’s worth, I only watched Candace Against the Universe one time, but I couldn’t tell Ferb had been recast. So props to David Errigo Jr. for a great impression of Thomas Brodie-Sangster’s take on the character.
The original series finale, “Last Day of Summer,” does feel somewhat definitive. However, the thing about summer is it happens every year, right? They can do something here that, deep down, I hoped Gravity Falls would do: pick up next summer. I assume this is the game plan. I actually thought giving Candace some attention in the movie was a good idea, but now, I doubt she will get much of a focus in the revival. This is for the best since she isn’t either of the titular characters. I don’t know if that was one of the problems with the movie since I only watched it once. Regardless, I can’t wait to see the new season(s), and I hope they don’t mess it up.
