The Gem Saloon has gotten some help from a True Detective. IndieWire reports – in an interview with True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto – that both Deadwood and True Detective have gotten some help from both Pizzolatto’s and David Milch’s creative auspices. Upon hearing that David Milch was helping on True Detective season 3, I instantly feared the worst for the Deadwood movie. When Casey Bloys took over as head of HBO, the narrative around the long-in-development movie changed from “It will definitely happen” to “We have to see the script first.” There was also a question of whether the whole cast would be able to come back, especially given that they were already going to be one cast member short in the late, great Powers Booth. For a while, I simply took solace in the fact that at least they were keeping Milch “in the family,” as it were. When it was announced that production was going to begin with the entirety of the original cast (sans Booth), I was relieved.
To now hear that Pizzolatto was also involved in the Deadwood script makes me even more excited for both projects. With HBO’s top creatives collaborating on their respective productions, it will only enhance each one and give viewers a far richer experience. I hope more collaborations like this happen in the future, but I wouldn’t want it to become a regular thing. It would be far too easy for this to turn into a crutch for creatives who aren’t in the same league as Milch and Pizzolatto. As a result of this, I can’t help but wonder if Ian McShane will show up on True Detective, much in the same way he did on Game of Thrones. I know this may be reaching a bit, but there’s no denying it would be fun to see.
