Today, PlayStation released their first State of Play for 2025, with a whole bunch of new games announced. You can watch the whole presentation below:
And here are the individual trailers:
I’ve never played any of the Monster Hunter games, but this looks like fun. The graphics are excellent, and the gameplay looks fast and varied. Monster Hunter Wilds comes out for the PS5 on February 28, 2025, but you can pre-order it now and get a Guild Knight Set layered armor and Hope Charm talisman bonuses, plus an exclusive digital mini art book if you pre-order through PlayStation Store.
Talk about a throwback! This looks cool, and I like the art and graphics of this platformer. Shinobi: Art of Vengeance will be released on August 29, 2025, but you can pre-order it now.
I didn’t know Sonic had his own Mario Kart series. This one looks… exactly like that description. Isn’t the whole point of Sonic that he runs at super speed? Why would he race with cars? Maybe I’m asking too many questions. The graphics do look fantastic. Sonic Racing: Crossworlds can be wishlisted now, and you can sign up for the closed network test on February 21, 2025.
Admittedly, I’m not a Digimon fan, so I could be off-base, but this looks like they’re trying to dress up a kids’ franchise and make it look cooler than it is. Not for me. Digimon Story Time Stranger will be released sometime in 2025.
Lots of action, cool graphics, and awesome-looking monsters make this trailer entertaining. Lost Soul Aside is coming to PS5 and PC on May 30, 2025.
Three quick announcements came next: a playable demo of Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii available Friday, February 14, on PS5 (the full game will be available on PS4 and PS5 a week later); a crossover DLC for Dave the Diver called Ichiban’s Holiday available in April 2025 on PS4 and PS5; and the Split Gate 2 alpha for PS5, which will begin on February 27, 2025.
It’s a wrestling game with a lot of product placement customization that looks like every other wrestling game. This will be available for PS4 and PS5 on March 14, 2025.
Despite having one of the collections downloaded, I still haven’t played any Borderlands games. This one will almost certainly be better than the Cate Blanchett movie, if that matters. Afterwards, the developers announced a State of Play in spring focused entirely on Borderlands 4 (although I think everyone could do without them calling it “badass” like they just stumbled upon it or something.) Borderlands 4 comes to PS5 on September 23, 2025, and you can wishlist it now.
I remember this one from The Game Awards, and it looks just as pointless and insufferable as it did then. Split Fiction will arrive on March 6, 2025.
It looks like Alien meets The Thing, with the atmosphere of the former and a monster similar to that of the latter. The trailer is all cinematics, so it’s hard to tell what the game will be like. Directive 8020 will arrive for PS5 on October 2, 2025, but you can pre-order it in June and wishlist it now.
I’ve never played these games, either, although I saw the awful movie based on them. This looks appropriately atmospheric for a horror survival game. Five Nights at Freddy’s: Secret of the Mimic will be available on June 13, 2025.
This was one of the highlights of the last State of Play for me, a horror game with characters made entirely from clay. I absolutely adore the look of this game. The Midnight Walk will be available on May 8, 2025, on PS5 and PlayStation VR2.
That wasn’t what I was expecting; you play as a baby octopus who has to escape from a food processing facility and fight aliens. This looks like a kiddie game, but it’s at least imaginative and kind of interesting. Darwin’s Paradox is coming to PS5 sometime in 2025.
I like the look of the gameplay, which is fast-paced and with lots of action, but roguelikes frustrate me. I think the modern era of gaming has spoiled me too much with its saves and whatnot. Warriors: Abyss is available now for PS4 and PS5.
I like the look of this one. Lots of fun and action, which is my speed. This will be available for PS4 on May 23, 2025.
Ah, so this is why the previous Onimusha game is only coming to PS4; I’d forgotten the title since seeing the trailer from The Game Awards. Of course, this one looks better, with outstanding graphics. Onimusha: Way of the Sword will arrive for the PS5 in 2026, but you can wishlist it now.
This is a remake of Metal Gear Solid 3, so despite the trailer showing only cinematics (unless there are some astounding graphics in this game), you probably know if you’re into this or not. Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater will be available on August 28, 2025.
There’s nothing to this trailer but atmosphere, which is not particularly interesting. Hell is Us will arrive for PS5 on September 4, 2025.
This is a DLC to Life of P, a sort of action-fantasy take on Pinocchio, and it looks wild. This will be available for PS4 and PS5 in the summer of 2025.
I have no idea what to make of that trailer. Dreams of Another will arrive on PS5 and PlayStation VR2 sometime in 2025, but you can wishlist it now.
The remaster comes with plenty of new features, including a survival mode where hordes of zombies keep coming at you. If you own the original Days Gone on PS4, you can get an upgrade to Days Gone Remastered on PS5 for $10. This will launch on April 25, 2025.
This is a Stellar Blade DLC that features new dolls and stickers, a new boss battle, and, of course, a new outfit. This DLC will be available in June of 2025.
This looks like a boring, overly cartoony mystery game for kids. Blue Prince launches on PS5 and Game Catalog in the spring of 2025.
The graphics are off-puttingly bad in this one; I get that it’s a throwback, but they could have made it look a little better than this. Abiotic Factor will be available on PS5 and Game Catalog in the summer of 2025.
Whoa! There’s fantastic imagery in this game, from a demolished London to a fantastical realm to giant monsters straight out of an Edgar Rice Burroughs book. The action looks fun as well. Tides of Annihilation is still in development and doesn’t have a release date yet, but you can wishlist it now.
Eh. It looks generic and sanitized. They really called the planet Vulcan? Can they get away with that? Metal Edem will be released on May 6, 2025, and you can wishlist it now.
Mindseye featured both a cinematic trailer (above) and a gameplay trailer, which you can see below:
I have no idea what this game is trying to be; there are soldiers, robots, gangbangers, normal cars, Earthbound and sci-fi guns, drones, and seemingly whatever else the developers could throw at the wall and get to stick. Mindseye comes to PS5 in the summer of 2025.
I have no idea what’s going on, but those sure are some purty cinematics. Saros will be released in 2026.
And that’s all for this State of Play. It was the usual mixed bag of cool-looking and boring games, plus some weird stuff. For me, Tides of Annihilation was defintiely the highlight, with Onimusha: Way of the Sword, The Midnight Walk, Monster Hunter Wilds, and Lost Souls Aside also standouts. But, of course, here’s hoping they’re all great, at least for their intended audiences.
