In her interview with Empire magazine, Kathleen Kennedy essentially confirmed that Rangers of the New Republic is dead. The series was announced a little under a year ago at Disney’s Investor Day event, and little has been said about it since. When Gina Carano’s contract with The Mandalorian wasn’t renewed, most of us assumed that Rangers of the New Republic would either be canceled or heavily retooled with a new character in the lead role. Regardless, this is the first time anyone from Lucasfilm has come out and said as much. Kennedy’s comment says, “We’d never written any scripts or anything on that. Some of that will figure into future episodes, I’m sure, of the next iteration of Mandalorian.”
I feel like I’ve been saying this a lot regarding Star Wars lately, but I’m not surprised. After all the other Star Wars projects being canceled and/or delayed, this seems par for the course. When Lucasfilm cut Gina Carano loose, that appeared to seal the fate of Rangers of the New Republic. None of this is to say that this isn’t a big deal, or that it’s good, by any means. Lucasfilm continues to publicly embarrass themselves with these retracted announcements, shifting directors, and other humiliating circumstances. A lot of what was announced at Investor Day has been canceled. And at this point, we haven’t heard anything about Andor or the Lando Calrissian series.
Meanwhile, what little Kathleen has said about the Kenobi series has been less than encouraging. I’ve been wondering for years what this woman is doing and why she’s the head of Lucasfilm. At this point, I’m too tired to care. I’m still excited for The Book of Boba Fett and some of the other shows that are actually being produced, but I’m basically numb to the constant bad news spilling out of Lucasfilm.
Its okay with me because all I care about right now from Lucasfilm are The Book of Boba Fett and The Mandalorian season 3.
I am excited for Book of Boba Fett but I am still really angry at firing of Gina Carano. Didn’t agree with some of her comments but she didn’t deserve any of it. Lucasfilm has huge double standard.
