The unparalleled travesty that was Amazon‘s The Rings of Power is getting a continuation in the distant future with an upcoming season 2. News about this new season has been released sporadically over the last few weeks, as it is currently in production. New casting announcements, recasts, and other hiring and story press releases have come out. However, few decisions exemplify the term “doubling down” as the recent news that season 2 will be led by an all-female directorial staff does. The only holdover director, now head director, from season 1 will be Charlotte Brändström — also from Netflix’s The Witcher — who directed two of the worst episodes of season 1, “Udun” and “The Eye.” She had no problem with the nonsensical battle strategies of “Udun,” the inconsequential volcanic eruption, or the stupidity of wearing a blindfold so people don’t know you’re blind. If Charlotte was willing to direct episodes that featured such insanity, there’s little doubt that she will allow any travesty that the writers conjure for season 2. According to Deadline, Charlotte “will be directing four episodes and will also serve as co-executive producer this season.” Deadline also confirmed that season 2 will have the same episode count as season 1: 8.
The other female directors joining the franchise are Sanaa Hamri and Louise Hooper. Each of these women will be directing two episodes. Hamri is an alum of Amazon’s other fantasy abomination, The Wheel of Time, as well as Empire, Shameless, and Glee. While Hamri’s filmography is colorful, Hooper’s is far more concerning. Her credits include The Sandman, The Witcher, and her BAFTA-winning direction of Our Gay Wedding: The Musical. Amazon is now marketing the future of The Rings of Power season 2 on how progressive they are by hiring an all-female directorial staff. They could not market this show on the quality of the writing or how intriguing the narrative was. Now, they have to resort to cheap and woke virtue signaling to both defend against future criticism and attempt to make themselves unique and appealing to the woke crowd.
