Robert Pattinson is about to go from indie darling to Dark Knight. Variety is reporting exclusively that a deal with the former Twilight star to play Bruce Wayne in Matt Reeves’ The Batman is in the final stages. It is important to note, however, that there is no deal yet, something that is emphasized by CNN.com – whose parent company is WarnerMedia – and Deadline, the latter of whom claims Dark Phoenix Star Nicholas Hoult is Warner Bros.’ second choice to face the rumored villains Penguin and Catwoman in the upcoming 2021 film.
That being said, should Robert Pattinson make the deal, I have to say that I’m warming up to the idea of him playing Batman. Not only does it keep Pattinson – who started his career in the Harry Potter films as the beloved, late Cedric Diggory and is about to shoot Christopher Nolan’s new movie – in the fold at Warner Bros., but it also allows him to return to big-budget films and remind a wider audience of the acting prowess that he has honed in a variety of lesser-known projects. Rather than let himself to be defined as a vampire, he diversified his acting résumé with films such as the dystopian Western Rover, Ad Astra filmmaker James Gray’s The Lost City of Z, and even David Cronenberg’s adaptation of Cosmopolis. These films showcase the actor’s range in ways his previous franchise efforts did not, and his career trajectory is reminiscent of the way Christian Bale acted in smaller roles before taking on the Caped Crusader. Bruce Wayne is one of the most complex characters not only in comics but in film as well, something that became increasingly evident during Ben Affleck’s tenure as the character. It’s important for actors to cut their teeth on a myriad of other roles before they take on Gotham’s favorite son, and as far as I’m concerned, Pattinson has done just that. Even if the deal doesn’t close and Hoult gets the cowl, it’s clear that Robert Pattinson has a long career ahead of him, and I really want to see what he’ll do next.
