RUMOR: Kingdom Hearts Animated Film in Development

Kingdom Hearts was first released in Japan on March 28th, 2002, with the North American release on September 17th of the same year for PlayStation 2. The story introduces you to the trio of Sora, Riku, and Kairi, immersing the player in multiple worlds set in beloved Disney films of old. It also establishes its own lore of the Heartless as well as Keyblades. Sora teams up with the iconic characters Goofy and Donald Duck to reunite with his friends while also saving each of the worlds they visit from the malignant Darkness.

Back in 2020, it was rumored that Disney and Square Enix would be developing a Disney+ Kingdom Hearts television series animated with CGI, with all the original voice actors reprising their roles. However, no official announcement or update has been given since. Now, four years later, it has been stated by The Disinsider via a mailbag question that Disney is working on an animated film of the popular and beloved video game series. Again, however, nothing has been greenlit, but the rumors are rumbling.

It’s also being speculated that since The Walt Disney Company and Epic Games partnered up back in February of this year to create a new “games and entertainment universe,” Disney is now more interested in actual gaming instead of films based on video games. It beings the timing of this rumor into question, particularly with the announcement of Kingdom Hearts 4, although no official release date for the game has been given.

Now, the floor is given to you, dear readers. What do you think of this rumor? And for fans of the series, are you worried about how loyal an adaptation it would be should this rumor of a Kingdom Hearts film be true? Let us know in the comments below.
