Marvel is thinking about bringing in the big guns. According to scooper Daniel Richtman, Sam Raimi is “a top choice” to direct Avengers: The Kang Dynasty and Avengers: Secret Wars. The Kang Dynasty was going to be directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, but he left the film last week, with rumors that writer Jeff Loveness is out as well; Cretton previously directed Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings for Marvel, and Loveness wrote Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania. No director was ever named for Secret Wars, though Michael Waldron, who wrote Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (which Raimi directed) and was the head writer for season 1 of Loki, is currently set to pen the screenplay. The rumor about Raimi directing Secret Wars cropped up in September, when another scooper, MyTimeToShineHello, used the same phrase, “a top choice.”

This is still a rumor right now, but it makes sense. Marvel won’t want to screw around with its upcoming Avengers movies (not too much, anyway); Raimi is not only well-liked and a proven talent, but he directed their most successful post-Endgame movie that doesn’t star Spider-Man. Putting him, or whoever they end up getting, in charge of both The Kang Dynasty and Secret Wars is a good move and indicates a planned cohesion between the films. There hasn’t been any talk of replacing Waldron, who is also the writer of the two most successful Spidey-less Marvel projects in the last few years; I could see them giving Waldron The Kang Dynasty as well. And the latter may need a complete overhaul if they really are “moving away from” Kang as the main villain. Depending on what ends up happening, Raimi may be the director in charge of establishing the MCU’s version of Doctor Doom, which is a neat prospect; Doom dabbles in mysticism as well as science, and some of the best parts of Multiverse of Madness were the creepy horror scenes where Wanda used dark magic. The way things have been going for Marvel, they need something to get people excited for their movies, and signing a beloved genre filmmaker like Raimi is a good start.
Not so much to do with Raimi, but the actual spoken lines in Multiverse of Madness were so bad, that it made me finally bail on the MCU. Someone said that America Chavez, Xochitl Gomez, is on Dancing With the Stars? She’s actually good on the show. DS2 was when I left Marvel. The dialogue was just awful.
I still think Raimi is good, but I wonder.
As for Secret Wars, the most frustrating thing about the botched Secret Invasion is that Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D actually did an incredible job on parts of that show. The part where the DarkHold was used to make a gateway and AIDA and The Framework was all really interesting and deep and profound, so for them to get a top cast to botch Secret Invasion, it was just frustrating.
