At the beginning of the year, it was reported that Russia would be banned from the 2022 World Figure Skating Competition due to the Russian and Ukraine conflict. It’s important to note that the USA was not banned, and Russia dominates in figure skating.
But that wasn’t all the latest news from figure skating. Kamila Valieva, the current Russian and European Champion, is facing a two-to-four-year ban for testing positive for three banned substances prior to the 2022 Winter Olympics. She is currently ranked seventh in the world because she was not allowed to compete at Worlds (otherwise, there is a very high chance she would have won). She also can land a triple Axel and a slew of quad jumps.
Kamila, then 15, claims she accidentally took her grandfather’s medication, which he took regularly to improve heart function. If the WADA (World Anti-Doping Agency) wins the appeal, Kamila will lose her Olympic Team Gold Medal and be banned from the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, Italy. Since RUSADA (Russian Anti-Doping Agency) has not made a decision, the case has been taken over by CAS (Court of Arbitration for Sport).
