Ryan Reynolds is ringing in the New Year with a gift for Deadpool fans. In a Twitter post showing what he was thankful for in 2023, Reynolds included a picture of himself in full costume – minus the mask – on the set of Deadpool 3, where he was walking beside director Shawn Levy. This is the latest in a series of reveals from Reynolds and some of the others involved in the film, starting with Hugh Jackman’s more comic-accurate Wolverine costume and including a shot of Dogpool, Deadpool’s mighty puppy. Deadpool 3 is scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 26, 2024, and will continue filming soon.
Thank you 2023… I got to spend most of the year working and playing with the people I ❤️❤️ pic.twitter.com/7GaOFrGRxV

This is one of those less is more situations. There’s nothing spectacular or particularly revelatory about the image; it’s the same Deadpool costume from the other two films, just with a darker black amid the red. And the black parts could easily get scuffed and dirtied up as he progresses through the film, fighting bad guys and Wolverine. But that’s a good thing; the previous Deadpool movies got the costume right, and there’s no reason to reinvent the wheel. (Now that I think about it, a great gag for a Deadpool film would be Wade putting on a bunch of different, elaborate outfits – Medieval Deadpool, Astronaut Deadpool, Deep-Sea Diver Deadpool, etc. – and saying it was so they could make action figures out of them.) In a larger sense, showing people that the costume is the same is a reassurance that the movie won’t deviate too much from what audiences like about Deadpool and Deadpool 2, specifically in terms of being Disneyfied. It’s comforting, like saying, “Don’t worry; Deadpool will be Deadpool, and you’re in for a good time.” I certainly hope that’s the case, and despite the wearying onslaught of awful Marvel content (and awful movies in general), I’m hopeful for Deadpool 3, and I like to believe Reynolds and crew are bringing back the old magic.
