San Jose Sharks forward Evander Kane is back in the news again. This time, he ran afoul of the NHL’s COVID protocols and will be subject to a 21-game suspension for breaking these superfluous, idiotic rules.
Care of the NHL’s Players Association, Kane released this statement:
“I would like to apologize to my teammates, the San Jose Sharks organization, and all Sharks fans for violating the NHL COVID protocols. I made a mistake; one I sincerely regret and take responsibility for. During my suspension, I will continue to participate in counseling to help me make better decisions in the future. When my suspension is over, I plan to return to the ice with great effort, determination, and love for the game of hockey.”
You can bet on that.
Kane has been under investigation by the NHL since October 8th in regards to this incident. It was alleged that the far-left-winger submitted a fake vaccination card to the team in the offseason. It’s ridiculous that needs to be the case in our society, but that’s a discussion that can be had elsewhere. If this is true, as the NHL has yet to disclose why he has been suspended, there might be a steeper fine for the troubled Kane, which seems to be a common thread with that particular surname.
Evander could wind up in prison or paying a steep fine. Apparently, according to the FBI: “buying, selling or using a counterfeit COVID-19 vaccination card is a crime” and “violators face a fine and up to five years in prison.” This is a travesty, even for such an unlikable person. The San Jose Sharks released a statement Monday also:
“While we are encouraged by Evander’s commitment to moving forward, we are extremely disappointed by his disregard for the health and safety protocols put in place by the NHL and the NHLPA.”
Evander Kane was also investigated for allegations of domestic assault by his soon-to-be ex-wife, Deanna Kane. The NHL said “its concurrent investigation into allegations of domestic abuse made against Kane by his estranged wife, Deanna, could not be substantiated.” So, Kane went 1-2 on the day; not bad.
This won’t be the first suspension for the Shark, having served an automatic 3 games for abuse of an official. If the Feds get involved, this also won’t be the first time Kane will be charged with a crime. In 2016, while playing for the Buffalo Sabres, he got rowdy at a Buffalo nightclub, getting into an altercation with some of the patrons and ultimately winding up with various charges regarding his unwillingness to leave the establishment.
It’s tough to side with someone who abandoned his team and made a mockery of the early days of the Winnipeg Jets, ultimately forcing a trade in 2015. But when it comes to the “Show me your papers” society he is fighting against, you’ve got to stick to your own principles and give him some deference here. But that apology was atrocious.
