It was all but confirmed and acknowledged years ago that a sequel to one of 2019’s best games, Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, was in the works, but it wasn’t until today that we got some substantial info and a teaser for it. Here’s the full trailer reveal below:
First thing’s first: Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is a direct sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order set ten years after Episode III: Return of the Sith, at a time when the Empire establishes its choke hold on the galaxy and Order 66 eliminates the Jedi Order. This places Star Wars Jedi: Survivor right in the middle of the time the new Kenobi show takes place. Will we see any Obi-Wan cameos in Survivor? Or will Cal cameo in Kenobi? Hmm, time will tell.
Anyway, to get up to speed on what the Star Wars Jedi arc is about: Fallen Order starred a young and scrappy Jedi padawan in hiding, Cal Kestis, as he trained to become a Jedi Knight and searched for any surviving Jedi left in the galaxy. This trailer confirms that Cal is primarily focused on locating the remaining Jedi as he comes across the bacta tank shown right at the end.
One of the lingering questions many had before today was if Cal would be a major character in the sequel, especially given some journalists’ demand for more diversity in the main character. Just as recently as a couple of weeks ago, a previous Respawn developer complained about calls for diversity not being heeded by the Respawn team. Well, good news to many: this trailer shows plenty of Cal without any signs of wokism so far.
Here’s a quick attempt at a trailer breakdown:
A low shot of clone troopers marching through a dark tunnel starts the trailer as the camera pans to a bacta tank. A cut then reveals the bridge of a derelict ship beached on a desert planet. Then, we’re taken to a dense cityscape very similar in tone to Coruscant and Nar Shadaa.
Some troopers bring (probably) Cal’s lightsaber to what looks to be a Grand Inquisitor or a senator.
There are cuts back to the bacta tank, with a long-haired Jedi preserved inside it. This unknown Jedi most likely is the “survivor” of the title, along with Cal Kestis, as the last in the line of Jedi across the galaxy. Cal is then seen fighting a red lightsaber-wielding hooded figure battling with his left arm only. The ending shot is of Cal and his sidekick droid, BD-1, gazing at the man in the bacta tank.
Presumably, the premise of the Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is finding the last surviving Jedi scattered across the galaxy and, hopefully, training them to resist the Empire. Cal still needed more Jedi training at the end of the first game, so I’m sure we’ll see his rise to knight or master in the sequel too.
Overall, while brief, the trailer shows a decent amount of info to form a base of what the game’s about. It has well-done cinematics but shows no actual gameplay. It’s reassuring that we’re continuing with Cal Kestis right where we left off in the first game. I’m optimistic about this Star Wars game. Despite being published by EA, Respawn has been putting out quality games for years, and Star Wars Jedi is my favorite game of theirs. The single-player-only aspect of Fallen Order was something EA rarely, if ever, focuses on, and Respawn has been releasing quality games for a while now, with the ever-popular Apex Legends being their most recent. Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has a release window of 2023, according to EA. Let us know your thoughts and theories in the comments!
