In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy revealed that the opening crawl is returning to Star Wars theatrical films. “The crawl’s coming back,” she said when asked if the Rey-led film would feature it. They then asked if this was the only film we could expect a crawl for; she replied, “No. The crawl is for movies.” Expanding on the Rey film announcement, Kennedy offered this:
“As we move into the future space — this story is about 15 years outside of The Rise of Skywalker — obviously we realized post-war, post–First Order rise of the New Jedi Order, we left episode 9 with Ray making a commitment to Luke Skywalker that she would rebuild the Jedi order. And so here we are — we’re ready to do that. And it took a lot of discussion because obviously we’ve been developing stories in different spaces, and television has been a big focus of our attention right now. But there’s still so much interest in what happens after The Rise of Skywalker. So we’re excited to be doing that.”
She then hints at the possibility of more sequel-era characters appearing in the Rey film. She also says Dave Filoni’s “Mando-verse” culminating film is more than a crossover of those shows and questions whether the galaxy wants the Jedi back.
I don’t care much whether this movie has a crawl; it’s about character(s) I don’t like or feel invested in. I find the bit about Rey’s promise hilarious, though. Luke essentially promised to do the same in the OT, and Kennedy and her goons turned that into a mockery. Why is it suddenly so important for these characters to keep their word? Because Rey’s a girl, she must be a good role model? I also think she’s deluding herself about the excitement surrounding what happens post-Rise of Skywalker unless she’s talking about herself and those making this film. Her insistence that Filoni’s movie is “more” than a Mando crossover isn’t encouraging; it makes me worry that they will overdo cameos and tie-ins, as they’ve done before. I still have faith in Filoni and hope for that project, but the Rey movie is DOA in my eyes.
But what do you think? Sound off in the comments!
