Pick up the nearest lead pipe and deal out some street justice because video game publisher Dotemu – partnered with Guard Crush Games and Lizardcube – has just announced that Streets of Rage 4 is in the works! The first in the beat-em-up video game franchise since 1994’s Streets of Rage 3, Streets of Rage 4 will continue the story of the Sega series, which saw ex-cops and other assorted vigilantes go rogue to liberate their city from the clutches of a vicious crime syndicate called… the Syndicate. The press kit on the game’s official site lists no release date or platform information, so little can be confirmed at the moment, other than that the game is indeed coming. Check out the Streets of Rage 4 trailer below…
What a nice surprise! I assumed Streets of Rage would live on as little more than the answer to the odd video game trivia question, but now there’s a fourth entry on the horizon. Some of the most fun I’ve ever had on my beloved Sega Genesis (and, indeed, beyond) has been playing this series, especially the first one; few things bring as much joy as calling in a rocket strike when overwhelmed by enemies. What little gameplay the trailer features confirms that Streets of Rage 4 should be business as usual in that department. Regarding characters, we’ve only seen Streets of Rage vets Axel Stone and Blaze Fielding so far, but I’m holding out hope for the return of my favorite, Adam Hunter (only a playable character in the first game, to the sequels’ detriment). Presumably Mr. X will be the villain again, but it would be nice to change things up and introduce a new main bad guy to menace the city (unless that snake lady is the new antagonist). Regardless, as long as they bring back the fun of the old Genesis brawlers, I’m there.
