Superman Suit Revealed

You don’t have to look up in the sky to see the Man of Steel today; just check social media. This morning, the official DC X account posted the first image of David Corenswet as Superman in James Gunn’s upcoming film, Superman. In the image, Superman is sitting in (presumably) Clark Kent’s apartment, putting his boots on while a circular object that looks like a cross between an onion and the movie version of one of the Green Goblin’s pumpkin bombs shoots a sky beam across Metropolis. (This time, the sky beam is going diagonally instead of vertically, which is going to revolutionize modern superhero cinema, I tell you what.) Superman will be the first movie in Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU and also stars Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and a bunch of other actors as a bunch of other superheroes. Superman will fly into theaters on July 11, 2025, and you can see the first image from the film below:

I’m kind of underwhelmed by this costume. It’s better than the Zack Snyder suit, but it doesn’t look a whole lot brighter, which is what I expected based on the emphasis Gunn and Safran placed on the hopefulness of their more traditional Superman. This may be because it’s partly in shadow, though; the red in the boots does look bright, while the blue is still a darker shade, so later images (and the movie) might be better. I’m also not crazy about how busy it is with those weird lines and tubing that don’t add anything. Newer takes on superheroes do this all the time, like the filmmakers want to put their personal stamp on it, and it always looks silly. I mostly liked Spider-Man’s MCU suit, for example, but those black bars were unnecessary, there just to make it different. When you have a suit as iconic as Superman’s or Spider-Man’s, I’d prefer they just accept that they don’t need to add anything and leave it alone. But we’re in an age where narcissism is more prevalent than respect for the past, so we won’t be getting away from this anytime soon. I do, however, like that the red trunks appear to be back, which I discovered by zooming in on – let’s say the chair – a lot more than I wanted to. (I’m convinced James Gunn made this necessary on purpose.) To me, Superman doesn’t look right without them, and whenever they’re not included in  his design, it smacks of whoever is handling this version trying to make him “cool.” I’m still not thrilled with this version of the S, and again, I wish they would just use the traditional one because it’s a universally recognized symbol that everyone but Lex Luthor loves. I adore “Kingdom Come,” from which this takes inspiration, but that’s a one-off story that changed the S to make a point, not Superman’s introduction. I’m glad they left off the black background, at least. But the best thing about the image is David Corenswet, who looks like he’ll fit the role aesthetically. I’ve never seen him act, but that could be a good thing, especially if he’s great in the movie; then, he’ll always be Superman first.

Yeah, honestly, this costume very much reminds me of the Superman costume from Superman III, when Superman is drinking in the bar and pew peeing glass shards into the mirror.

It’s such a blah image. I’d think they’d want to get people excited for a new Superman movie, and they have him putting his boots on. I get what they’re going for, but it doesn’t work.

Great, a cut rate Henry Cavill and The Amazing Miss Girl Boss, and, of course, upping the stakes instead of having a good story. What could go wrong?
