Sylvester Stallone is headed to streaming. Deadline exclusively reports that Stallone will star in and produce a TV series called Kansas City with fellow producers Tyler Sheridan and Terence Winter, as well as 101 Studios. Stallone will play a gangster from New York who relocates to Kansas City, Missouri, and finds starting a new crime syndicate harder than expected. Winter, who wrote for and produced The Sopranos and created Boardwalk Empire, will serve as showrunner. While Deadline says that “a writers room is up and running,” there’s no mention of Sheridan’s involvement in it; 101 Studios CEO David C. Glasser’s statement indicates that Sheridan will be part of the creative process in some capacity, however. Sheridan is the creator of the critically acclaimed series Yellowstone, as well as the writer of films like Sicario, Hell or High Water, and Wind River. Kansas City will air on Paramount+.
I swear the Hollywood powers that be won’t rest until I’m subscribed to every streaming service under the sun. Kansas City sounds great. Despite Oscar, I like the idea of Sylvester Stallone playing a mob boss, and in particular one who finds himself a fish out of water in the Midwest. I can see him as a former leg-breaker who, as much as he may balk at having to rebuild his empire, relishes the idea of getting his hands dirty again. Terence Winter is perfectly suited for this kind of material, having worked on two amazing HBO gangster series. Sheridan, I can take or leave, and my reactions to his work run the gamut. I love Sicario, like Hell or High Water and Wind River fine (although they feel a little bit like TV movies to me), and don’t care for Those Who Wish Me Dead or Sicario: Day of the Soldado. I haven’t seen Yellowstone yet, but I’ve heard mostly good things (outside of this new season). But I like the sound of this project.
How does Kansas City sound to you? Can the small screen hold Sylvester Stallone? Will he run into Kansas City Little Big Mickey Blue Eyes in his travels? Let us know in the comments, and stay tuned to Geeks + Gamers for more TV news!
Honestly, I always saw Stallone a badass veteran (maybe because of Rambo movies). Premise sounds pretty cool, but if Stallone will be main villain, who could be the main protagonist?
