Remember Taika Waititi’s as-yet-untitled Star Wars project? Well, he gave Total Film an exclusive interview discussing some of his ideas for the film. Little is known, as this film is still in the development stage, but it is set to be Star Wars’ triumphant return to theaters next December. Waititi has worked on Star Wars before, voicing IG-11 in The Mandalorian and directing the season 1 finale. Check out an excerpt from the interview here:
“Look, I think for the Star Wars universe to expand, it has to expand. I don’t think that I’m any use in the Star Wars universe making a film where everyone’s like, ‘Oh great, well that’s the blueprints to the Millennium Falcon, ah that’s Chewbacca’s grandmother.’ That all stands alone, that’s great, though I would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world, otherwise it feels like it’s a very small story.”
Before I get too deep into Waititi’s statement, I think it’s worrisome that he’s still in the conceptual stages of the story. This movie is supposed to be in cinemas in 18 months, and I think Lucasfilm may want to go ahead and delay it. I’m always in favor of giving a project more time to make it as good as possible, and at this point, it may be a necessity. I agree with what he says in theory; I just hope he has a good idea for whatever story he decides to tell. Part of the problem with Star Wars is that the creators keep returning to the same 60ish years. So, I agree with him that the story should expand. I just hope it doesn’t evolve into something resembling Thor: Ragnarok.
What do you think of Taika Waititi’s statement? Are you excited about his Star Wars movie? Let us know in the comments!
Hes probably going to make a goofy film about Ewoks, but him being him will change their race name and claim its canon.
