The 15th Doctor’s Costume Revealed

The future of the Doctor Who franchise is in a very precarious situation. Tentative excitement or total black-pilling are both entirely warranted at this point, considering its recent history. For every positive announcement, such as Millie Gibson’s casting, the new logo, or the return of Christmas Specials, there is a story about the showrunner calling all Republicans the C-word, the news that Disney will be funding the new series, and the potential involvement of the destroyer of male role models, Phoebe Waller-Bridge. The next announcement in this long string of warring news does nothing to settle the debate regarding the quality of this franchise moving forward. The 15th Doctor, played by Ncuti Gatwa, is revealed in all his starkly orange “glory” in a post made by the Doctor Who social media accounts.

While this costume is heavily reminiscent of the David Tennant outfit, the bright orange T-shirt destroys the fluidity of the costume, making it painful to look at. This is far from the worst costume a Doctor has ever worn, with Jodie Whittaker’s travesty at the top of that list. However, it cannot be called good. If only that orange T-shirt were a button-down or a shirt of nearly any other more neutral color. Additionally, the leaked TARDIS interiors feature strong white and gray colors, which may clash strongly with the browns and oranges of this Doctor Who costume. Design-wise, this coming era has done nothing to make it stand out, nor does it improve substantially on the horrifically designed Chibnall era. Mediocrity and neutral reactions are all that these designs have been proven capable of inciting. More than a year stands between Doctor Who fans and Ncuti’s coming era in the TARDIS, leaving plenty of time to correct these poor designs, however unlikely that may be.

I really fell outta the series a bit into Capaldi’s run. My first Doctor was Tom Baker, by total accident. Didn’t even know what Dr. Who was at the time. My favorite to this day is Eccelston. My only exposure to the show after Capaldi’s first series was reviews and YouTube clips. I will likely maintain the same exposure going forward, but I actually think the new dreads on this Doctor are cool.
