If you didn’t realize that 2024 is an election year, the amount of political entertainment set to debut should clue you in. Today, HBO released a trailer for The Regime, a comedy-drama satire. The Regime depicts the decline of a fascistic government that rules a European country, with palace intrigue and warring factions plotting against their ruler. Kate Winslet stars as the Chancellor, with Hugh Grant, Matthias Schoenaerts, Martha Plimpton, Guillaume Gallienne, and Andrea Riseborough in supporting roles. Will Tracy serves as showrunner, with Stephen Frears and Jessica Hobbs executive producing and directing. The Regime will being airing on HBO Max on March 3, 2024, and you can see the trailer below:
The first I’d heard of The Regime was when I saw it among the series featured in that HBO 2024 sizzle reel, and it was one of the announced shows that most interested me. The new trailer confirms that this is something I want to check out when it arrives. I like the idea of examining how a corrupt government falls through a fictional story; instead of contending with the baggage that comes with either a historical series or directly referencing a modern government, The Regime can focus instead on the larger ideas and themes about how fascism ultimately crumbles. Of course, this could go wrong if it decides to break its allegorical frame and become a lecture about Trump or whoever they choose to target (which I say as though it would be anyone but Trump right now). But I hope the creatives behind it can resist the urge to lecture. And I have faith in those creatives. The showrunner is Will Tracy, who wrote The Menu, a fantastic movie with wonderful themes and subtext that was among the best 2022 had to offer. I’m also a fan of Stephen Frears, who directed The Grifters, High Fidelity, The Queen, Philomena, and many other great movies. I’m not as familiar with Jessica Hobbs, who directed some episodes of The Crown (which I really need to watch), but I like enough of the talent to give this show the benefit of the doubt till I see it.
High Fidelity is outstanding, and The Queen and Philomena are excellent as well.
First I heard of it. I like the title and I like Kate Winslet. What a solid career she has had with Titanic and Divergent and now, this. Looks good. Thanks for posting.
I like this kind of fiction with tyrannical, corrupt politicians and abuse of power. Like Political Power fantasy. Never heard of Frears, as I do not watch that much in general.
