The Witcher 3’s Geralt Backs Up Henry Cavill

Doug Cockle, the voice actor for Geralt in the CD Projekt Red Witcher Trilogy, has remained relatively silent in recent months regarding Henry Cavill’s recasting. He occasionally commented about being “really sad” while wishing Liam Hemsworth luck. Still, he never really had a public position on the drama. Now, he has broken his silence to lend his support to Cavill. Speculation regarding what motivated him to speak out could find countless explanations, such as the horrendous writing and reception of Blood Origin, the alleged smear campaign against Henry Cavill, or any number of other contributing factors. While staying as diplomatic and professional as possible, Cockle spoke at a recent panel, saying that he understands why Cavill would have chosen to leave that type of work environment.

If that’s the case, I can completely understand that, because Henry is such a huge fan of the games and the books and the writers on the Netflix series have chosen, for whatever reason they did so, to deviate quite severely from the books and the games. Whether that’s good or not? That’s down to what you like. I personally don’t understand the choice, but… there you go. I think that’s why… Henry’s leaving.

Fans have often been told that contracts preclude honesty amongst those who participate in big productions and the general entertainment sphere. While this is absolutely the case in many situations, there are ways to lend your support to the fans without affecting the current product’s financial viability while not coming across as unprofessional. Doug Cockle rides that line perfectly in these comments. He can’t come out and say what he thinks of Netflix, so he merely says that he doesn’t understand their perspective. This does not harm Netflix’s product, but it lets fans know where Cockle stands. This small and simple approach can mean so much to the disenfranchised audience.
