Three Actresses Testing for Supergirl

James Gunn’s DCU Superman has been cast, but the role of Krypton’s other superhero survivor is still up for grabs. Deadline exclusively reports that three of the actresses preparing to test for Kara Zor-El are Milly Alcock, Emilia Jones, and Meg Donnelly. Alcock has made a name for herself recently due to her role on House of the Dragon, the Game of Thrones prequel series on HBO. Jones has appeared on the all-but-forgotten Marvel TV show Locke & Key and an episode of Doctor Who, as well as in the movies High-Rise, Youth, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Interestingly, Donnelly has portrayed Supergirl before as a voice actress in the DC animated film Legion of Superheroes and will reprise the role in the upcoming Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The takeaway from these actresses is that, again, Gunn is aiming for comic accuracy in his DCU casting. All three of these women look like they could be Kara, albeit with a wig or dye job, in Donnelly’s case. They’re all pretty young, too; Alcock and Donnelly are 23, and Jones is 21. I don’t have an opinion on this one, as I haven’t seen any of them in anything. (Well, I saw On Stranger Tides, but Emilia Jones played “English Girl,” and shockingly, I have no memory of that character.) At the moment, I would bet on Milly Alcock, as she seems to be in vogue right now, which is a reminder that I need to get around to watching House of the Dragon sometime soon. Deadline mentions that James Gunn will be involved in the screen tests and that Supergirl:  Woman of Tomorrow currently has no director, meaning this will be Gunn’s choice. They also say that Supergirl will likely appear in another DC movie before her solo film, which makes sense because Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is set to come way down the line. My guess is that she’ll be in Superman: Legacy; that’s going to start shooting in a few months, so casting her would be a priority if she’s going to show up there first. Additionally, Gunn seems to be shoving every character who’s ever been in a DC comic into that movie. But it’s neat to see the new film version of the DC Comics Universe taking shape; now, we just have to hope the movies are good.
