I am afraid it won’t be. He may finish it by fall or winter. It was supposed to be out this July. I’m thinking early 2021.

I honestly don’t think it is ever coming out, sorry. A Dance with Dragons was released in 2011 and all he’s done since is screech about Trump or Sad Puppies or the New York Giants or the  movie theater he bought that nobody goes to.

It was supposed to be out this July.

This was a joke Martin made to somebody in the New Zealand armed forces, something about how they could be put him in prison if it wasn’t ready by WorldCon 2020, which was supposed to have been held in New Zealand. It meant nothing.

I really do hope Winds of Winter comes out soon, but I get the feeling that despite all of the things he has said, George did not like the way the ending of the show was received (and I believe Bran being king is a plan he had for the books as well) and I think hes already changing course and that could push the book back indefinitely.

I know he would never admit to actually changing what he writes based on fan reaction, but I cant see him or his publicist and publishers willing to basically keep in something that was so incredibly negatively received.

Frankly I have no hope that he is ever going to finish the book.

I also no longer care the series is dead to me.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist or anything like that, but…..does anyone think it’s strange that Patrick Rothfuss’ Wise Man’s Fear and George R.R. Martin’s A Dance with Dragons were both written in 2011, and the next book in each respective series has been nine years in the waiting. Both men’s works are at the top of the Fantasy reader’s lists, and neither of them have given a date for their books next release. I wonder if the two of them have a bet going on to see who’ll break first.

Am I the only one who things Rothfuss is very overrated? I felt like Name of the wind was a who lot of nothing. Song of fire and Ice is alright, but I dont why people love Rothfuss so much.

        Very suspicious.  Frankly F’em both.

I think GRRM is overrated btw; After book 3, there’s a noticeable drop in quality.  The guy’s an excellent writer but man he needs an editor.  Book 5 follows Tyrian who becomes a slave, meets a dwarf girlfriend, gets drunk etc and meanderingly finds himself in an arena before Dani is dragon-napped.  Basically they could have cut most of that shit and then gotten some more chapters in?  There’s also a new POV, a Dornish prince who ends up dying/cooked by dragons…  which is again a lovely waste of pages that could have been given to POVs we care about.

As for Rothfuss, it’s hard to say if the 3rd book doesn’t deliver.  Name of the Wind is an interesting subversion of ideas and a deconstruction of a hero done well.  Wise mans fears were also done well… but it falls flat if book 3 doesn’t link everything well.  There are a lot of interesting theories on hints and characters like GOT had… but I’m losing patience waiting for book 3.

I agree. Overrated indeed. I enjoyed the first book, but Wise Mans Fears was a letdown. But I gave it a second read just to make sure, and had the same reaction afterwards. Then I saw a video on Youtube of Rothfuss getting salty with fans asking about the release date of the last book, and that kind of put the nail in the coffin for me. https://youtu.be/zbeYASTX310

I have no desire to read the books but if Martin finishes them, I will read them. I’m not reading a series of books that I will never know the end of.

What bothers me now is that Gary at Nerdrotic said he has no one to finish his series.  He’d rather it not finish?!?  That’s kinda a selfish move.  I’d have some kind of ghost writer set up with outlines.   I wouldn’t leave everyone hanging.   After Season 8 destroyed me, I at least had hope the books would put things right.  So sad now 😢
