Tagged: anime list
ok last night while watching a stream with ivan, ryan, jeremy, and some of the other geeks and gamers team i heard jeremy say something about how he just started watching attack on titan and how he had never really watched anime before. it got me thinking, for those of us who have and enjoy it we need to give him a list, a list of anime for him to watch in case he wants to continue watching anime. so i figured i would start a thread to help here is some of my suggestions.
the next few are more slice of life i think he said that wasnt his thing but will include them anyways
Dude.
That list is way too big and way too varied in both quality, age, and completion for an anime newb.
I forget what stream is was, it might have been the gaming with geeks stream on Saturday, but I believe Marc the Cyborg gave the best advice for helping someone like Jeremy to continue watching anime. If there is any chance for Jeremy to truly become a fan of anime, he needs to be specifically directed at completed series that even when presented to a normie it would be accepted and lauded. He needs to watch something that has no filler and that has been adapted properly from its source material.
I totally agree with Marc that if Jeremy is going to try another series he should watch something like Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Watched with either the sub or the dub, FMA Brotherhood is a perfect show.
Or, give Jeremy a Gundam show to chew on. He likes mechs, he loves action, and there are tons of completed Gundam shows to choose from that are all of quality.
Throwing out a massive disjointed list like that consisting of a mish mash of different sub genres, imo, will only scare someone off.
I can recommend him these although he needs Krista to get him into them

I second Code Geass, Demon Slayer, Sword Art Online, and Fullmetal Alchemist, imo both Brotherhood and 2003, these are all great anime with interesting stories and characters
A couple other favorites i’d recommend to anyone, Digimon and Zatch Bell, love these anime
Although i’ve always liked anime, i only really started to get into it discovering and exploring tons less than a year ago, the last anime i discovered before then which i really love and isn’t a sequel or spinoff of anime i already know was Fullmetal when i was 10/11 yeasr old, for me personally seeing a massive list of different anime doesn’t scare me off, rather it sparks my curiosity and makes me want more
-For DC, Marvel, Power Rangers, Pacific Rim, TMNT, Ghostbusters, He-Man, She-ra and Superhero Fans: Tenkai Knights, Marvel Future Avengers
Tenkai Knights used to be on TV when i was in middle/high school, also watching Future Avengers now, but i haven’t seen enough episodes to be able to recommend them yet

Thing is, I just think that everyone spurging massive lists is the wrong way to keep a burgeoning anime fan on target, especially when the lists are a mess of different sub genres. Based upon what we know about Jeremy’s interests in gaming and entertainment, I simply think the best direction is to give him two maybe three completed series to look at and consume to continue to grow his foundation.
After that, direct him to a database or have an focused discussion where he can assess where he might want to go next in terms of shows, then choose his own direction to continue to grow as an anime fan.
I just think throwing out massive lists of what we all like is not the best way to do this.
Here are my top recommendations based on the above suggestions made by other users in this thread. Most of these shows and films are action-oriented, and there are only a few slice-of-life shows and films listed. I have not seen some of the listed items below in their entirety, but have always heard positive criticism about them online and from other sources:
Planetarian (2016)
Yatterman Night (2015)
Gargantia on the Verdurous Planet (2013)
Kill la Kill (2013)
WataMote (2013)
Patema Inverted (2013 film)
Steins;Gate (2011)
Angel Beats (2010)
Trigun: Badlands Rumble (2010 film)
Soul Eater (2008)
Gurren Lagann (2007)
Robotech: The Shadow Chronicles (2006 film)
Solty Rei (2005)
The Galaxy Railways (2003)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (2002)
Banner of the Stars (2000)
Crest of the Stars (1999)
Trigun (1998)
Outlaw Star (1998)
Serial Experiments Lain (1998)
Perfect Blue (1998 film)
Flame of Recca (1997)
Rurouni Kenshin (1996)
Ghost in the Shell (1995 film)
The Slayers (1995)
Akira (1988 film)
Robotech (1985)
Any of the Studio Ghibli films (especially Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, The Secret World of Arriety, and Howl’s Moving Castle)
Gangsta is underrated and good Seven deadly sins, Castlevania the animated series Mobile suit gundam Iron blooded orphans
Good lists, but definitely too much animes that don’t suit most casual dudes (age 25 – 40).
You can start with animes without “childish”, “chibi” and princesses stuff (lol) and just go watch full badass shows with a lot of action and blood:
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Afro Samurai
Hellsing Ultimate
Black Lagoon
Claymore
Trigun
Vinland Saga
Elfen Lied
Ergo Proxy
Have fun
Cowboy Bebop
Samurai Champloo
Afro Samurai
Hellsing Ultimate

Claymore
Trigun
Vinland Saga
Elfen Lied
Ergo Proxy
I don’ recommend recommending Claymore to anyone. The anime ended up butchering the manga source material by going too fast and not breaking it up into multiple seasons until the manga was completed. After a certain point it went off on its own, and as always when lesser writers try to finish a true creative’s work on their own, it was terrible.
The Claymore manga was a great and wild ride of ultra violence by the end with much more heart and soul than the anime ended up having.
@Roas , I didn’t read the manga so I went without knowing what kind of anime it was, and I was blown away by the badass fighting scenes and blood. For me it was awesome, but yeah, I noticed that the ending was a little confusing/rushed, but in my opinion, didn’t messed up the whole product, it was a pretty decent show with an awesome art style. ;) But I get it it might be different for people who read the manga (like many other animes).
Cheers

I started with the anime too, but after that ending I realized something was wrong and investigated to see what the manga was doing.
I highly recommend picking up the manga where it breaks from the anime. The depth and the richness of the story is a drastic difference, as well as the action. Where the anime branched off, you did not even get to see half of what the Claymores were capable of in battle with all their different abilities, not to mention their antagonists. As I said, it was a masterpiece of ultra violence action.
A good intro series is also one of the best series of all time: Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood.
You people need to make shorter lists:
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex
Black Lagoon
Space Dimension Fortress Macross (or Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann if that’s too “old”)
Kill la Kill
Monster
Cowboy Bebop
This should work.
These list are crazy. He likes action based anime because he likes AOT. I’d have him watch Afro Samurai – simple story with blood, guts, & action. He is also into space adventures so maybe something like Outlaw Star. We should just have a voting list set up if possible. One for old anime & one for new anime so he can get a feel for both time eras. The best of the best.
