Ouran High School Host Club
Black Butler
Fruits Basket
The Ancient Magus’s Bride
The Wallflower
His and Her Circumstances
Nodame Cantabile
Skip Beat
Kamisama Hajimemashita
Vampire Knight
Thinking Person’s Anime:
Wolf Rain
Rahxephon
Ergo Proxy
Samurai Champloo
Psycho-Pass
Genius Party (OVAs)
Also just wanna tag in Darker than Black and Demon Detective Neuro (Majin Tantei Nougami Neuro) cuz they are really great too.
Idk how I would recommend anime as a genre to anyone since most of my friends already watch anime anyway. But if there is an anime series I would recommend someone watch it’ll have to be Yu Yu Hakusho. It’s characters are three dimensional and can be quite relatable despite the insanity of the situations around them, the villains are interesting, the setting going from the living world (Earth), the Spirit World, and Demon World are all facinating places with widely different rules and whether or not you watch it subbed or dubbed the humor is great in both languages. Yusuke Urameshi might be one of the greatest anime protagonist of all time, but hardly anyone mentions him or Yu Yu Hakusho in general much these days… probably because it’s not as long as Naruto, Dragon Ball, and One Piece (all series I also love but everybody knows about them).
Here are some of my top recos:
FMA/FMA Brotherhood
March Comes In Like A Lion
Yona of the Dawn
Kino’s Journey, both the old series and the newer one
Psycho-Pass
Snow White with the Red Hair
Cromartie High
Mashin Wataru
“Violence Jack”
No. Oh dear god, No. Violence Jack is literally one of the worst anime adaptations even the creator Go Na Gai despises it. It should tell you something when the creator despises the anime adaption of his work.
I always recommend to those who never watched anime or just think they are just silly cartoons with big eyes characters – Death Note. An easily understandable and original plot and yet a lot of twists, turns and suspense. Other is Code Geass – a mecha aspect can be a bit distracting but story and characters are as good as in Death Note. And third is Monster – a psychological thriller, a bit slow in the beginning, but then it becomes very suspenseful. Attack on Titan – still on-going series, but should be ending soon, wont go into it much, because its probably on everyone’s ear right now, it’s good, plot is pretty original.
If someone likes good cyberpunk I recommend Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 1st and 2nd Gig and Ergo Proxy (this one is a bit complicated so maybe not for everyone, probably better not take a long breaks between watching episodes).
If someone into romance mixed with other stuff: Your Lie in April (a good slice of life story with great soundtrack), Steins;Gate (this one has time travel, so if you are into that), Chobits (this is one is also funny) and Nodame Cantabile (this one is with classical music).
If someone into episodic anime with just good stories I recommend Natsume’s Book Of Friends and Muhishi.
Movies made by Makoto Shinkai are very good like Your name and 5 centimetres per Second. 2 very first Ghost in the Shell movies too.
Of course there is a lot more, but these should be the good ones to start with.
