I always thought that companies going through crunch was due to poor planning.
CD Projekt Red have recently said that they are doing mandatory crunch and it makes me think that crunch has to be done at some point.
Cyberpunk 2077 is a game that has been worked on for 8 years, how does it need to go through crunch?
Yes, when you don’t set any deadlines and only reveal the game when it’s done, not 2+ years before release.
Every big studio game is a crunch game with perhaps the exception of Rockstar Games.
Then again, just because a game takes many years to complete doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s good when it finally comes out (Duke Nukem Forever) and some games stay in the alpha/beta-testing stage for many years like Star Citizen, but all EA games for example are 100% on schedule whether they’re good or bad or terrible.
People act as if crunch is unique to the gaming industry. It’s not. And it’s business as usual for most for profit companies in competitive fields. We have deadlines and we try to meet them as best as we can.
