While this thread is about Don Bluth’s films, I just want to announce something.
In my opinion, Don Bluth is like Hayo Miyazaki; the last of the dead art hand drawn animation stylist. His last movie was Titan A.E. and it was awesome, but there’s so much I haven’t seen. He came to my home town in El Paso which I had no idea, is the same he grew up in or was born in, I can’t remember. Anyway, got the honor to meet him and its been 12 years since he did anything and its been hard for him. He has a university in Arizona that teaches hand drawn art and animation. I talked to somebody there asking about his latest project he’s been wanting to do for 30 years; his dream called Dragon’s Lair. If you remember the arcade back then, you should be familiar with the idea. He did an Indiegogo campaign and it made a good amount of money, like $700,000 dollars, it wasn’t even close to his goal to make the movie, like $35 million is what I’m told he needs to make the movie. He was only able to do pitch ideas. They look amazing but nobody would fund his project. Covid hit and they couldn’t continue during the lockdowns which was a major blow but even so, he contacted many companies, MGM, Sony, etc. Nobody was willing to pay that much for it. So rather than dropping the project, he decided to offer something and I can understand if its to get somewhere. Anyway, I saw an article I think and it asked if the movie should be 3D animation and I voted no because it would defeat the purpose of it being a Don Bluth film. Its nothing without his magic. So instead of either, Netflix will be making a live action of Dragon’s Lair. Don’t know when it’ll happen but that’s what we’re getting. I fear and said it’ll bomb big time but I could be wrong, as long as its not woke or even a mediocre film. What feels so hard to reach is something I want to help Don achieve before he passes away; one last good ol’ fashion classic hand drawn 2D animated film and that’s Dragon’s Lair. It is such a long shot and it may not happen but I at least will try with cryptocurrency trading as best I can. I’d be lucky to have Elon Musk donate half the money needed for the film.
Anime is the biggest trend in cartoons that isn’t woke and Hayo Miyazaki is going strong with his legendary work of hand drawn animation, I would like to have what we used to have years ago return. I don’t want hand drawn 2D art to die. Anyone interested in learning and keeping the concept going, see if you’re interested in attending to Don Bluth’s University. But in the meantime, let’s reflect on his amazing movies. I haven’t seen it all but I remember Sword in the Stone a long time ago along with An American Tail and The Land Before Time. Not too long ago, my town hosted Secret of Nymh in the theater and it was amazing. I remember Titan A.E. and that was his last work but it was pretty awesome as well. I haven’t seen The Black Cauldron and I’m sure there’s more. But please share your experiences, memories, recommendation and what you would like to see rise up from Don Bluth’s magic. I’d like to see the Zelda series made in 2D animation. It’d be like Sword in the Stone vibe.
Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace were huge at one time and I think they even preceded the Nintendo gaming system. That goes way back. Maybe too much time has gone by. Those IP should be worth a lot and it’s a shame that they are not. It says 1983 is when those games came out. 1984 was a monster year for games, as well as movies. Just such a major year for things to happen.
I don’t think I ever saw Secret of Nymh, but the animation is wonderful. Yeah, Don Bluth deserves more recognition. He is a true legend. All Dogs Go to Heaven was big, wasn’t it? I never saw it. I also recall Titan A.E., but just don’t remember it doing that well at the box office. Don Bluth is one of those guys that deserves backing no matter what.
I am kind of surprised with his track record, that he did not approach Angel Studios. They would have loved him, I think, if he could come up with more wholesome things, as he has done in the past. Really hope Netflix nails Dragon’s Lair. Dragon’s Lair and Space Ace were on such a higher level than all other arcade games.
Here’s one I never heard of: A Troll in Central Park. It makes you wonder what other kid stories could be done by Don Bluth. Bluth is very accomplished. My hunch is Disney tried to suppress him, but I don’t have any proof. It’s just their competitive nature.
And people wonder why I won’t watch THAT version of ‘Little Women’ despite the cast. Sorry, I’m sticking with the book on that. As for Narnia…it was bad enough that Disney crapped on it with that horrible film series and now this. The only live action version of it I’d watch is the late 80’s TV version from the BBC. I know the animated effects look horribly outdated by today’s standards but I’d rather watch that than any other version.
As for the topic at hand (Don Bluth)…love this guy😍. I got the 3d remake of ‘Dragon’s Lair’ on the PS2 round about last year or so and I’m really enjoying it, despite it being challenging on some levels. I think they toned down that particular aspect from the original version😅.
Secret of Nimh is essential viewing. Period. End of story.
Seriously though, Secret of Nimh is one of my all time favorite movies.
based on Robert C. O’Brien’s 1971 children’s novel, Mrs. Frisby and the Rats of NIMH.
From Nicodemus, she learns that many years ago the rats, along with her husband and Ages, were part of a series of experiments at the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH for short).
Reminds me a wee bit of Watership Down.
Brisby longs to move her family out of the field as plowing time approaches but her son Timothy has fallen ill.
Brisby visits Mr. Ages, a friend of her late husband, Jonathan. Ages diagnoses the illness as pneumonia, provides Brisby with medicine, and warns her that Timothy must stay inside for at least three weeks or he could die. On her way home, Brisby befriends Jeremy, a clumsy but friendly crow. They both narrowly escape from the Fitzgibbons’ cat, Dragon. The next morning, Brisby discovers that Farmer Fitzgibbons has started plowing early. Although her neighbor Auntie Shrew helps her disable his tractor, Brisby knows she must devise another plan. Jeremy takes her to meet the Great Owl, who tells her to visit a colony of rats that live beneath a rose bush on the farm and ask for the services of Nicodemus, their wise and mystical leader.
Brisby enters the rose bush and encounters an aggressive guard rat named Brutus, who chases her away. She is led back in by Ages, and is amazed to see the rats’ use of electricity and other technology. Brisby meets Justin, the friendly captain of the guard; Jenner, a ruthless and power-hungry rat opposed to Nicodemus; and finally Nicodemus himself.
The experiments boosted their intelligence, enabling them to escape, as well as extending their lifespans and slowing their aging processes. However, they are unable to live as typical rats would, and need human technology to survive, which they have accomplished only by stealing. Nicodemus has authorized a plan for the rats to leave the farm and live independently in an area they refer to as Thorn Valley.
Nicodemus gives Brisby a magical amulet that will activate when the wearer is courageous. Because of the rats’ relationship with Jonathan, they agree to help her move her home. First, they need to drug Dragon so that it can be done safely. Only Brisby can do this, as the rats cannot fit through the hole leading into the house; Jonathan was killed by Dragon in a previous attempt, while Ages broke his leg in another. That night, she puts the drug into Dragon’s dish, but the Fitzgibbons’ son, Billy, catches her. While trapped in a birdcage, she overhears a telephone conversation between Farmer Fitzgibbons and the staff of NIMH and learns that the institute intends to exterminate the rats in the morning. Brisby then escapes from the cage and runs off to warn them.
As a rainstorm approaches, the rats begin moving the Brisby home, with the children and Auntie Shrew inside, using a rope and pulley system. Jenner, who wishes for the rats to remain in the rose bush, sabotages the assembly with his reluctant accomplice Sullivan, causing it to fall apart and crush Nicodemus to death. Brisby soon arrives to warn the rats about NIMH’s arrival, but Jenner attacks her and attempts to steal the amulet. Sullivan alerts Justin, who comes to Brisby’s aid. Jenner mortally wounds Sullivan but is injured by Justin in a sword fight. As Jenner attempts to attack Justin from behind, the dying Sullivan throws a dagger into his back, killing him. The Brisby home begins to sink into a mud puddle and Brisby and the rats are unable to raise it. Brisby’s will to save her family gives power to the amulet, which she uses to lift the house and move it to safety. The next morning, the rats, with Justin as their new leader, have departed for Thorn Valley as Timothy begins to recover. Jeremy soon meets a female crow who is just as clumsy as he is, and they fall in love.
In a woodpile on a farm in Payson, Utah, a rambunctious orange kitten named Banjo constantly makes mischief, to his family’s dismay. After Banjo disobeys his father’s warnings of learning to mind Banjo’s little sisters and, after one of Banjo’s stunts nearly gets his little sisters killed, Banjo’s father prepares to spank the kitten and orders Banjo to retrieve the switch that will be used against him; Banjo instead runs away. He hitches a ride on a feed truck to Salt Lake City.
In the big city, Banjo finds excitement at first, but soon he causes a massive traffic accident. He eventually retreats to the alleys, homesick and hungry during a thunderstorm. Another cat named Crazy Legs discovers Banjo and offers to help him find his way back home
During their search one snowy night, Crazy Legs and Banjo come to a nightclub and enlist the help of more cats, including a singing cat trio (Cleo, Melina and Zazu). Later that night, while searching for the truck that could take him back to the farm, Banjo and Crazy Legs are chased by a pack of dogs. The pair barely escape and end up at the singing cats’ home for the night.
The next morning, Banjo wakes up and hears the driver of the truck out in the street. The cats rejoice and say many goodbyes before Banjo gets on the truck and eventually reunites with his family, who are happy to see him home.
I’d also loved to have seen Mr Bluth direct the Harry Potter films in the late 90’s when they were going to do them in animated format. I think his style of animation would’ve suited it well. Can you imagine how terrifying Voldemort would’ve been under him😨?
Don Bluth worked with George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg and James Horner on The Land Before Time?
This preceded Jurassic Park by years. Made a return profit on that one.
That film still has me bawling with tears like a five year old when Littlefoot’s mother dies 30 years later. I’m ashamed to say that I liked the sequels and I’ve got all the games on my PlayStation…which I still play with to this day but only because I like the soundtracks, especially for ‘Racing Adventure’.
@DragonLady This is amazing. Sequels, games, and soundtracks. The people and things discovered from the people here are kind of blowing my mind. Little things have happened. For some reason, I was telling a relative about this thread and what you guys were talking about and it turns out that I have a signed copy of Siegfried’s Silent Night by Toby Bluth. How is that even possible? I think a great grandparent went to some art show or comic shop in California and he was there.
It’s strange because that name Don Bluth looms large in history, but I only knew the name and not really the body of work. One name that popped up while reading was Chuck Jones of Loony Toons. He’s another name that stood out over the years and I always liked Mel Blanc.
@DragonLady I appreciate you mentioned the soundtracks because a lot of this stuff I am hearing for the first time with a bit of realization and examination. This goes way back for me probably before being fully conscious.
In the Galilean countryside near the city of Nazareth, a young boy and his father own four donkeys. One donkey, Small One, is so old and weak, he cannot adequately do his job of carrying the wood collected by the boy’s father. The boy loads Small One with the smallest sticks, and helps him to carry them. One evening, the boy’s father says that he has to sell Small One because he cannot do enough work to cover the cost of his care. Devastated by the news, the boy volunteers to take the donkey to be sold so that he can try to find him a kind master. The father agrees and tells him that he has to sell him for one piece of silver.
The next morning, the boy takes Small One to the market. At first they are tricked into visiting the local tanner by a guard at the city gates. Terrified, they run out of the shop when they discover he only wants the donkey’s hide. As they wander the streets looking for a buyer, they encounter several townspeople, shop owners, and merchants, none of whom want to buy. At last, the boy leads Small One onto the stage at a horse auction. The auctioneer has no interest in selling a “scrawny donkey”, which causes the boy to insist that Small One is “good enough to be in a king’s stable”. This prompts the auctioneer and the crowd to laugh and poke fun. When the auctioneer attempts to sit on Small One, shoving the boy out of the way, Small One rouses the strength to buck and kick the auctioneer off him, sending him crashing into the stage and knocking it over.
The boy and Small One run away, and sit at a street corner hopelessly weeping. At this moment, a kind man comes up to the boy and asks if Small One is for sale. He needs a gentle donkey to carry his wife to Bethlehem, insists he will take good care of him, and offers one piece of silver. The boy accepts, says goodbye to Small One, and watches as the couple and Small One leave on their journey as a bright star appears in the sky.
My favourite ‘Land Before Time’ PlayStation game was always ‘Racing Adventure’ but maybe I’m being biased because I like a good racing game😂! You get to play as one of the characters and run some racetracks or obstacle courses depending on the game mode you’re playing and there’s even a bit for two players as well. The other two games are called ‘Return To the Great Valley’ (I’m still confused 20 years later as to why Littlefoot on it was saying that “We did find the Great Valley without help from the grown-ups” when it was his MOTHER that gave him directions🙄!) and ‘Big Water Adventure’ which was the only game that was a in-game tie-in to the films (it was “based” on the 9th film ‘Return To the Big Water’). Again, I only still like going on them as an adult because I love the soundtracks to the games😅.
Ya, The Land Before Time is a wonderful movie. It’s another favorite of mine. Most people don’t know that George Lucas was part of it.
I realize it is not Don Bluth, but I would like to mention The Last Unicorn. It was actually animated in Japan. Voices of Mia Farrow, Jeff, Bridges, and Christopher Lee.
I will also mention The Black Cauldron. Another favorite of mine. It was a very dark movie for Disney and had to be edited severely delaying the movie and it was still dark even after all the editing.
I believe my younger sister had ‘The Last Unicorn’ on VHS back in the day and liked it despite it being dark. I was finally able to watch ‘The Black Cauldron’ a few years ago on DVD and really enjoyed it. If current day Disney is dumb enough to do a live action remake of it they should have Gary Oldman as the Horned King. If they don’t dumb him down, I’m sure Gary would have even us adults hiding behind the seats 😅! John Hurt was terrifying enough on the animated version😂. Saw a lot of dark animated kids films myself when I was a kid. Same with my sister when she was smaller. We weren’t a bunch of pussies. Having said that, the Evil Queen on ‘Snow White’ did frighten me though😨.
