Edmonton Elks set all-time pro sports record for consecutive losses at home
The Edmonton Elks set the all-time North American professional sports record with their 21st consecutive home loss after losing 27-0 against the B.C. Lions on Saturday night.
Another record for a once proud franchise.
The previous record of 20 consecutive home losses was initially set by Major League Baseball’s St. Louis Browns in 1953.
Records are made to be broken, I guess.
Edmonton’s last victory at Commonwealth came on October 12, 2019 — 1,386 days ago —
As of today, July 29th, 2023.
Along with breaking the record, Edmonton fell to 0-8 for the first time in modern franchise history.
The team was founded in 1949. So in just under 75 years, this is their first 0-8. Yikes!
For those that don’t know, the Edmonton Elks (formerly the Edmonton Eskimos before they were forced to change their name) plays in the CFL – Canadian Football League.
Oh, and another thing of note:
Unbelievably, it was the second time this year that the Lions have blanked the Elks, also doing so in the second week of the season, when they won 22-0 in Vancouver. Before that Edmonton had not been shutout in a game since 1976.
Almost 50 years since their last time they were shutout, and having done twice in one season, and by the same team! ! !
