If PS5/Xbox Series X Game Prices Are Going Up, Then Microtransactions Must Go

TL;DR – Gaming retail prices are going to increase to at least $70.00 for the upcoming consoles.

Honestly, I want them to try it and tempt fate. The AAA industry has become far too corporate and this could be the straw that breaks the camel’s back. With several countries on the verge of recession, I’d find it hard to believe that even normies would be willing to splurge that much cash at once. Maybe another video game crash could teach some humility.

I can understand the argument for production values, but come on. Striving for affordability should also be important.

I dunno why this is even a story.

Game prices have jumped $10 pretty much every generation since 8 bit to 16 bit. 8 bit was $40, 16 bit $50 throughl 32 bit, post 32 bit has been $60 at cap.

So it’s going to be $70…so what? Zero surprise.

Just noticed it’s an IGN story…IGN…like we really give a damn what they report anymore.

Its not that big of a deal because most people buy most games digitally now. There are sales all the time on the PlayStation store. This is only going to be a problem if you want to buy a game within the first year or so of it coming out. I rarely do this.

Same. I like physical copies, so I’ll watch a game for a long time til the price drops. I usually have an MMO to play, so I’m usually good to wait a while. I got both steel case editions of Trails of Cold Steel 1 and 2 PS4 for under $40. I’ll wait for 3’s steel case, and 4 as well so it will all look nice and shiny on my shelf. Then when I have all 4 games, I’ll have myself a fine old time.

AAA games have costed around 100 for a while now.
Yes it’s stupid and indefensible that these multinational companies breaking profit records every quarter need to do this (if you, yourself, are a defender, you are fucking stupid and I have no respect for your opinion.  Mindless consoooomers are as annoying to me as SJWs. Both groups have a profoundly negative effect on society and both being removed would have a very positive impact).
But, 40-60 dollar season passes on top of the original 60 to has been the norm for a while.
Personally, I’ve boycotted most AAA publishers anyway and mainly play AA and indie stuff so it’s all whatever to me.
Besides, I’m done with the Sony brand next generation and I’m not replacing it with Microsoft.
Games, in general, are cheaper on PC and that’s where I’m headed.

My rule is to not pay more than 60€ for a game, unless it’s something special like a limited edition or something I have to import because “global standards” and “core values” won’t allow a domestic release, so for that I need to pay shipping and 19% tax extra. If next gen games exceed my limit then I will simply buy less games on release and wait for sales, I will not break my rule.

And given those trends, they’ll likely keep jacking up prices until only those with deep pockets afford them (tbh we’re getting to that point, now). I still like physical retail because I like having a collection to display; storing games digitally doesn’t have the same novelty. Slow, incremental increases is how they get you to just accept it to the point of apathy.

Gaming journalists, whether it’s IGN or Gamespot, are total clowns when it comes to games, and I’m not particularly fond of their embrace of radical social politics, but it’s still important to get information from people you disagree with and/or dislike: They might know something you don’t.

There’s another issue that comes to mind when faced with a next-gen price hike: the health and well-being of the talented people responsible for creating these costlier Series X and PS5 games. Will the developers themselves see any of these extra dollars, in both their base salaries and their bonus packages? Will their working conditions – all too often exposed as a punishing “crunch” by investigative reports – improve? Publishers owe it to their teams to pay it forward so that all this extra revenue isn’t simply going to go straight into the pockets of executives and shareholders. We need assurances from any publisher who decides to charge more for their games that they are treating their workers fairly and ethically. In fact, we need that from all publishers, regardless of what they’re charging – but especially those demanding top dollar.

I thought this was at least a good point. If perhaps I knew those who put the blood, sweat and tears into making the product would benefit from price increases then it might not be so bad but chances are their wage increases, assuming they get any, will be negligible. Being a AAA developer sounds like living hell; it’s probably going to get worse for them.

I don’t buy new game, I only wait for complete editom, when you see how they fucked people with Horizon Zero Dawn, removing a full part of the game just to sell it latter as “new map and contents”!

and now they do that for everything, so unless you wait, you never buy finished full game
