    It’s not a cyberattack. Apparently ’twas caused by an update to Crowdstrike security software.

    Even though this isn’t a cyber-attack it shows how easy it is to cripple the world.

    Microsoft was affected but is back up and running thanks to their resources. But in many cases the fix cannot be remotely deployed and technicians need to be physically present at each affected computer to input the fix. Imagine the headache for companies with tens of thousands of machines – you’re looking at days upon days of work.

    Somebody’s head is gonna roll for this.

    Good grief, these parasites are in everything. We should probably reclassify this incident as a dry run.

    Only reason why I’ve got Windows is that Windows PCs are usually better for gaming than Mac PCs. Meanwhile my best friend who has a Mac is laughing at this lol. So glad I held back on getting a Windows 11 (this one is Windows 10 and I’m still getting nightmares of that horrid Windows Vista I had).

    For those paying attention, government contracts were given to the kinds of people who will turn the lights out just to get Trump off the headlines. Our money stolen by people who will put the squeeze and flex on you.

    @DragonLady believe it or not my main PC is still running Windows 7 – because I’ve streamlined my workflow on it. Windows 11 is the worst as it takes a couple of extra clicks to do the same thing especially in Windows Explorer.

    Having said that I do have a couple of machines running Windows 10 and 11 for work purposes – used mainly for sand-boxing and testing and they’re locked down as much as possible from those snoops at Microsoft.

    This is why I recommend that people keep:

    •  Their data stored locally and a copy of it stored offsite. Imagine all your stuff stored in the cloud and with the push of button…or the upload of a faulty update…you lose all your information.
    • Another PC with an alternative operating system. Sorry, I don’t like MacOS but as an alternative to Windows I’d recommend people try Zorin OS. It’s a Linux distribution that’s very similar to Windows and comes with basic software for doing regular daily tasks like Web Browsing and Word Processing. It’s currently running on my backup machine.
    • Keep a standalone machine, totally isolated from the internet and any networks.

    Oh yeah, and make sure to keep some cash on hand. Strange days are these…

    @Maverick

    My Windows Vista was like that after a year or a year and a half of having it. Then it’d take five/ten minutes to stop running around in the background even though it was logged in and everything otherwise your session would be going at a snail’s pace for the rest of it. I was glad to see the back end of it four years ago. My current Windows 10 I only got just so that I could play ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ and ‘The Sims’ on it and it’s the best gaming laptop I’ve had since the XP.

      That pic is friggen hilarious!

      The Crowdstrike thing is odd.  I am not sure they have that large an install base.  If they do then that is super surprising for a company that started in 2011.

      Now recall Crowdstrike is the company that “worked” for the DNC when they got hacked.  And they agreed with the FBI that is was Russia.

      @comicsgate

      You named the wrong guys.  The intersection of big tech, big gov and even the WEF is this guy.

      Very helpful.
      Admittedly, I don’t know that much and rely on sources and usually, trust them. Will not always be on point.
