I found this article pretty interesting.
It really highlights just how much Disney has fucked up Star Wars. They aren’t even close to having earned enough to pay dividends on the 4 billion they bought Lucasfilm for. Their net profit between the movies is only 1.2 billion and that isn’t even including marketing costs, which is usually around 200 mil for a major blockbuster. With 5 movies released, that would be 1 bil spent on marketing, reducing their profits to only 0.2 billion.
Considering how much they have damaged the brand, their viewership has been getting less and less for every movie, making it very unlikely that further releases would be profitable at all. There is certainly no chance that further releases would be profitable enough to make up that 3.8 bil deficit they need to make up.
That is probably why they have stopped releasing movies. They have damaged the brand enough to the point where there just isn’t any money in it any more.
And that does not include alot more things.
What all did disney spend on Star Wars?
They spend more than just those five movies.
There are the tv streaming shows.
There was the theme parks, and the moneypit they call Galactic Cruisers.
And then since in order to get the Star Wars franchise, they had to buy ALL of Lucasfilms, including Indiana Jones (and their failed fifth film).
So all this “profits” is no where close to covering the initial cost of purchasing Star Wars and all of Lucasfilm.
ITS THE FANS’ FAULT FOR NOT SHOWING UP
